A bolt action repeater with a quality 3x9 variable power scope, chambered for 30-06., is hard to beat, but not impossible.

Mule Deer? I think wide open country, I'd take a .270 over a .30-06 but both would work fine, 150gr in the '06, and 130gr in the .270

anything from .243 to .338 win mag would be a good choice pretty much.

not sure a magnum is really required for a mule deer, in fact its probably what a .270 was made for. Alot of guys love the 7mm rem mag for muleys, but again why need a magnum?

For years I used a Remington model 700BDL in 243win. using 100gr. Remington Core-Lokts. This last season used my new Remington model 700xcr in 270wsm. I took this mule deer doe with 150gr. Winchester Power Point one shot at a lasered 298yds.

I am glad you didn't say "best" mule deer gun, because there is no such beast. There are many great mule deer calibers. The 270 is what I have in my gun safe. My gun loves the 140 grain hornady light magnums.

Don't need anything special for mulies as long as you do your part. Mule Deer are really quite easy to kill compaired to most other big game. I usually use my 25-06 or 7RM.

Mule deer often live in big wide open areas, so I prefer a flat shooting caliber that I can shoot accurately out to 450 yards. Some can shoot farther, but that is about the end of my comfort zone for good shot placement. I use a 300 win mag with 150 grain hornady interbonds. The 300 win may be overkill for some, but I am usually elk hunting at the same time I am after Mulies. The main thing is to have a rifle you shoot well, and have practiced with in real world conditions, since shot placement is the most important part of the equation.

Weatherby Ultra light .270 w/ Swaro 3x9x36. Nice, light, and flat shooting.

300 WM works well at all acceptable ranges for deer. It is also good for elk and moose and bear. You can also use it for pronghorn with the lighter bullets. Realoading will also make it even more versatile. I use 110 gr on the really small stuff. 130gr on pronghorn and such. 150 on deer. 180gr on elk. and 220 on bear.
