Max Range for a 300 WSM,7MM WSM and 270 WSM on elk
 

hey every one i was just wondering what the limit would be for elk hunting with a 300 Wsm like as in yards like i no it is possible to shoot one at 600 yards but i no for instinse like a 243 would be like 100-150 yards max but i dont no about the 300 Wsm just wondering thanxs

More than likely farther than you can shoot. A 300WSM should be able to take game with the proper bullet out to 400-450 yds no problem that is of course if you can hit what your aiming at.

Will it kill an elk out to 600 yards, absolutely!

How many people could without a doubt consistently make a 600 yard shot? About 1 in 1000

For me and mine, 400-450 is max.

It 300WSM can do 500-600 yards. BUT DON"T TRY IT TILL YOU HAVE PRACTICED MANY MANY TIMES WITH HUNDREDS OF ROUNDS.

If you don't practice your are assuming you can make the shot and you know what you make when you ass-u-me.

The abilities of the cartridge will far exceed your limitations!

My personal abilities dictate that my max range on gameirregardless of cartridge is 400 yards. Beyond that distance from field positions I am unable to consistantly place shots within the vital area.

I read somewhere that a bullet should deliver 1500 ft lbsof energyfor Elk and 1000 ft lbs for deer sized game. With that in mind, here are the distances the calibers you mention fall below1500 ft lbs (based on Federal Ammunition Ballistics)

270 WSM = 400 to 500 yards
7mm WSM = 500+
300 WSM = 500+

As someone stated earlier, most hunters do not possess the skill to shoot at these ranges. However, if you apply the same thinking to the .270, .308, or .30-06, it would limit their range to 300 yards were they reach the 1500 ft lbs threshold.

the longest shot i will be taking is around 300-400 yards but mite poke at some at 500 so your saying the 270 WSm would be capable of doing this???
