Cool Clear Water

How do you fellers satisfy the need for lots of water while elk huntin' ? I make a point of knowin' ever spring in a 20 sq mile area. I carry a quart in my pack, an' drink til its gone. I have a filter gizmo in my saddle bag, but I often don' t make it back to the hoss afor I' m dryer then a Texas windstorm. Its plain thet I git tired quicker, an' end up sorer at the end of the day when I drink too little. But dang if water ain' t heavy.

Water is heavy, but it is a necessity. I recently learned one is already dehydrated as soon as they are thirsty. Good luck.

Enough water is extremely important. I have actually cached jugs of water before early season in places I knew water would be hard to come by. Can' t carry enough. Lately I have done the carry some and drink that first route; found a very handy and light " filter bottle" that I carry evrey step I take. Much better than packing many excess pounds of H2O. Can get thirsty in between springs though.

Usaully don' t use a filter when up in the backcountry, those rockies are about as close to heavens gate that your going to get and you know thats clean water. But i do carry a pur filter in case i gotta drink downstream from the herd.

Where I hunt you can drink water from streams no problem, (Clean and pure without any bad microorganisms.) and there' s plenty of them. On the tops I often suck on snow on a hot day, or either take a belt canteen or use one of those drinking bladder systems (eg. Platypus or Camel Back.) Ususally you can find a seepage somewhere.

If you hunt in an area with animals, an' elk count as animals, you can catch diarerrer real quick, an' thet' s if yer lucky. A friend got the giardia in the highest, cleanest mountains you' ll ever see. Animals carry giardia an' any water drained off the surface has the bacteria. There ain' t a safe place to drink from streams or lakes. Springs are a lil' better, but still likely to give your the flamin' squirts too if it don' t come outta an' aquifer. Thet poo poo on the ground you check as elk sign carries all kinda nasties, long with moose turds, pine martin turds, beaver scat, badger stuff, jack rabbit balls, an' bird juice. It all carries giardia nowadays, an' the water can look as clear an' clean as you' ll ever see. Taste good too. In the summer, I' ve been so thirsy I wanted to stick my face in a clear lake with the horses an' slurp up some cold water. Hard to resist when yer dry. But knowin' what my friend went thru with thet giardia keeps me either boilin' it or filterin' it afor it touches my lips. My advice is to trust no source. Streams genrly come from lakes, an' lakes are the worst fer collectin' turd bacteria. Streams with beaver ponds are the easiest way to git sick.

Probly the former. Some fellers don' t git the squirts as easy. But its like drivin' ' thout a seat belt, it only takes once to make an' impression or kill you outright. Where you from? Even here in scarcely populated, lil' visited mountains of Wyomin' our lakes got lots of human born bacteria just from camp site drainage. Hippie backpackers leave enuff offal to make lickin' a toilet seat at the corner bar a better bet then drinkin' unboiled water. With all the people infestin' Arizona and Colorader, I' d say thet' s a worse situashun. An' Mexico....well, thet speaks fer itsef. So when you say " down here" , where you talkin' ' bout?
