DIY Mulee Deer Hunt

Ive never hunted Mule Deer beforebutI'm itchin' to give it a good, hard try. I prefer DIY but I understand sometimes its not really an option depending onyour location. However, Iam wanting to do a DIY mule deer hunt inTexas or Coloradobut have NO CLUEwhere to begin as far as selecting a location. I am in houston, texas (wrong part of the state, i know, haha) but i have no problems travelling to a location that could be a pretty good distance away. Does anybody have any ideas of where a DIY'er could start looking for decent locations in Texas, or surrounding states that are not hard to get a tag in?

Also, I have a relativeup in Paonia Colorado (hour east of grand junction) that I am able to staywith. Are colorado mule deer tags hard to get a hold of? Is there good mule deer hunting in that area of the state that can be done by a DIY'er?

thanx in advancefor any and all information.

Montana, eastern, thousands of deer! you can easily shoot one, won't be a monster most likely, but if you can't shoot a deer there, I dunno what to tell you.

Went to the Pine Ridge area of Nebraska last year near Chadron.Nebraska has the lowest price out-of-state tag in the country, nearly 100% draw, tag is good for either whitetail or mule deer and is either sex, public land with access, and plenty of good Mulies. Got a 25" 4x4 with eye guards after turning down 4 other good bucks.

Gangly, the muley points I'm building now are for the Grand Mesa area, I'm going with a group whohas been at this for many years. I'm the new guy [8D]. . . .and like drs, they like to hunt Nebraska(western) while they're waiting for enough points in CO. Tags are cheap, public land is everywhere. Last year they went 4 for 4 by day 4 of their stay.

First year we applied for mule deer in Colorado we got drew tags, none of us had preference points at the time either so it can be done. We've killed nice bucks around Peublo on public land. Check out Pagosa and Gunnison, nice bucks roaming around there too.

you should come to NE, there are deer all over, the G&P is issuing 2000 more tags this year than last. deer populations are a record high I shot a 5x4 this year,i saw approx. 80 muleys the other day in about a 2 hour trip home. Plus if you see a monster whitetail, which there are several of around, you can shoot it.

As Sooner State Hunter mentioned Pagosa springs area of Colorado(Southwest) has lots of muleys.
I saw several nice bucks and videoed a couple while elk hunting. As far as availability of tags, I
believe they are by drawing. Not sure how draw success rates are. All that information is readily
available on the Colorado Divison of Wildlife website. Good Luck.
