. . . . Now on the other hand a .270 WSM is a whole lot more than the regular run of the mill .270.
Pardon my ignorance, but is the WSM a whole lot more? I love the WSM and own a 300WSM. I dont handload but is 200 FPS and 2 inched flater at 400 yds a whole lot?

There is something to be said about the 270 Win. Long, lean and sexy! The 270WSM is short, fat and err ... short.

Ok, how about comparing apples to apples. The only other 270 Magnum is the 270 Weatherby, to achieve that 200-300 fps more in that cartridge your using quite a bit more powder. With that being said, I have found the best accuracy in my 270 WSM loaded at slightly better than 270 Win velocities when using standard construction bullets like the Sierra Gamekings or the Hornady interlocks. When using Nosler Accubonds or Bt's and the Hornady SST's I get moa performance at 3250-3300 fps chronographed and amazingly enough they shoot to the same point of impact. Can you hunt bigger animals with the WSM, no not really your limited to the same game, however the WSM shines with the heavier bullets over the 270 Win. I would have no reservations going on an elk or moose hunt with my 30-06 as my primary gun and the 270 WSM as my back up. My minimum load would be a 140 gr Accubond or partition, even better would be a triple shock if it gives acceptable accuracy. So bottom line are there better tools for the job, yes many but is it necessary, NO.

Well maybe the .270 WSM isnot a whole lot more, butthen again it justmight be.From what Ihavefound, from different loads actualy shot through a crony, by myself and others who post the info online. The average is around 300 f/s faster accross the range of bullet weights for the WSM. That is with both .270's having equal 24" barrels. The problem ismost .270 win barrels are22" long compared to 23" orthe standard 24" for the WSM. So that might make the spread closer to 400 f/s withthe same bullets. Now consider this a regular 30-06 shoots a .180 grain bullet between 2700 to 2800 f/s.On the other hand a .300 Win Mag shoots the same 180 grain bullet between3000 and 3100 f/s. Again the spred is only 300 f/s between these two! But yet ask anyone off the street/gun shop, at the range or evenonline, what the difference between these two cartridges are?More than likley people will tell you that it is a huge difference and the .300 Win Mag has way morerange and power. So that is why I say the .270 WSM ismorepower and range over the regular .270 win. In actuality it might not kill an elk any more dead, but I do believe it will extend a hunters range. With a accurate .270 (regular) and a competant shooter I believethat combo will kill elk all day longat a maxrange of up to 400-450 yards. Beyond thatand I believe the .270 lacks the KE needed to bring down a elk. Sure it can be done as I proved as ateenagehunter, but man did I feel like I was shooting a BB gun when Ifound out I hit the young bull five times. Thoses 5 shots were all good chest vital hits I mightadd! Like I said I knowing what I know now Iwound not take that shot again with a regular .270.Nowon the other hand I believe theWSM 270with its 300 f/s faster bullets can and will get the job done on a elkout to 500-550 maxyards if needs be. IMO thats a whole lot more if you were to ask me.

This is the .270 WSM with a 140 gr. Accubond starting out at 3300 f/s.

Ok I am trying to figure out how to post a ballistics table on here, if anyone has any idea please let me know.

i have a friend who curently owns an elk/White-Tail deerfarm neer Hudson Bay Saskatchewan he previously bought a 270 WSM he is using - .Winchester Ballistic tips, Nosler Partions, nolser Accubond and he said he shot one of his bulls at 443 yardsi personally thought he was lieing but to all of you 270 WSMowners i would like to no if this would be true he said he was using Federal nosler Partions150 Grains ??/
Standing in a pen, if you couldn't get within 100 yards, you must pretty much suck as a hunter.

My opnion is that he did it to prove a point - bragging rights.

After all - how far is it going to run when it is in a pen.

High fence / low fence - it is still a fence.

It will work fine when the hunter does his part.
