Default 270 and Elk

If you were going to hunt elk with a 270 what bullet would you use? My Dad currently shoots 150 grain Federal BTSP's and I was wondering if that bullet would be what he would want for elk?

My dad used a .270 with 150gr federal premium nosler partitions on black bear, big black bear! spot n stalk....200yds etc....not over bait at a 200 lb cub.....

I'd recommend any premium controlled expansion bullet, so if he likes 150's get somethign nice, nosler, trophy boned bearclaw, barnes.....

I think those BTSP's might not want to penetrate, im my mind they're softer than other bullets such as noslers etc....geat for deer etc....but not so much an elk. Sure they can work/do the job, but if you get a bad angle and its your only shot of the hunt....and it gets away because of poor bullet performance ie downhill uphill, 1/4 away....you'll have to go through more bone, muscle etc...to get at those vitals.

150 grain Nolser Partitions, it's the standard by which all others are judged. Federal has them in the "Premium" line. CB

The Double Tap ammo I referred to is the 150 Grain NP.

Just at a higher velocity and KE energy level.

I have used 140 grain ballistic tips when they first came out though I don't reccomend them, 140 grain TBBC, 140 grain failsafe (discontinued) and 150 grain corelokts.

The only one to not exit was the TBBC but to be fair it traveled through the liver, then lungs, then broke the offside shoulder and lodged under the skin and was perfectly mushroomed. An excelent elk bullet inthe .270 or any other cartridge for that matter.

I would also take a hard look at Barnes and Winchester XP3.

You want a good bonded bullet like everyone else is suggestinf. The TBBC is good as is the Partition. I personally like the Winchester XP3 it is made to take down large game and will travel through an elk like a RPG.

Anybody used these on game? or just what they read? I suspect since they've been out for a year now some have, just haven't seen to many average joe hunters(like most of us here)mention experiences on them above deer sized game. Just curious. Being a reloader myself not offered as a component(well at least thatI am aware of under the same name),I have not.
