RE: help with caribou hunt
cari2, My friends went 2 years ago, that was before the sickness was wide spread. I did hear that this past year was bad all over Quebec. Also they booked direct no booking agent. Price increase due to rise of daily life, fuel, food, etc. Every outfitter runs big numbers of hunters, at the time Safri offered a return free hunt if a legal bull was not harvested.

RE: help with caribou hunt
I Guaranteed also 1 bull and my price is much better because we own the bush plane compagny and GEORE RIVER is not sickness I hope your friend Kill 2 nice bull.

RE: help with caribou hunt
Hey there cari2. I am considering a caribou trip soon. While I did go to Alaska before I would choose Canada. I think prices are getting out of hand everywhere. I am an outfitter here in Wyoming and I think my prices are too high. That's another story. Any way I would like to get some more information from you about your hunts. Could you send some particulars to [email protected] I have some fantastic hunting for mule deer and antelope if you might be interested in a trade. You can check out my site at http://www.antelopeoutfitters.com/

I hunted with Tuttulik outfitters in Quebec and had a great hunt. Check out this link to see reports on outfitters. http://www.huntinfo.com/reviews/outfitter_reviews.php3

RE: help with caribou hunt
Well they have different sub species....I think alaska only has 1 variety......but i agree I'd go canada, I think some caribou hunting in alaska can be very tough! not that canada is much easier, but I do thik more chances....
I saw a late season rut hunt with helicopters on .....jim shockey's show, it was awesome, expensive though! but tons of huge bulls. I think its the central barren ground that have the largest antlers......thats where I'd probably start.....pick the sub species you want I say and figure out wher eto go for that variety. |
RE: help with caribou hunt
Try Woodland Caribou in Newfoundland. Huge blocky bodies and nice antlers with mass. It is a great hunt mostly spot and stalk with guides. I used Snowshoe Lake Hunting and Fishing out of Millertown NL. First rate people and a comfortable camp. Decent prices when I went last time 3 years ago.

RE: help with caribou hunt
I've hunted caribou in Alaska ( barren ground), Northwest Territories ( central Canada Barren ground) and Quebec ( Quebec Labrador)...
All of my Alaska hunts have been DIY drop hunts...These hunts can be a wonderful wilderness experience, but they can also be a nightmare if you are not prepared, both physically and mentally... Much of the Alaskan tundra does not lend itself well to bowhunting...Lots of wide open spaces without much stalking/ambush cover... The NWT hunts are great hunts... Not a lot of outfitters there, but they tend to be honest and well organized... If money is not a factor, NWT would be my first choice... I hunted with Adventure Northwest... Other good oufits are McKay Lake Lodge and Barry Taylor, but I've never heard much negative stuff about any outfitters up there... Quebec has LOTS of outfitters...Some are honest and well organized, and it has it's share of fly-by-nighters and crooks... A couple of good choices are Jack Hume Adventures and Tuttilick... Cover in much of northern Quebec tends to lend itself to good bowhunting..Excellent odds of getting big bulls here.. I've never hunted Newfoundland.. I have heard that caribou numbers are dropping in some areas and nonresident tags may become more expensive or may not even be issued in some areas.. Woodland caribou are not migratory, which increases your chances in some areas..Newfoundland is a good place to bowhunt... One minus is that while body size is large, antlers onwoodland bulls are MUCH smaller than other species... An average bull of any other species will DWARF a B&C woodland rack, and the racks that most of my friends who hunted there have brought back from there looked like cow caribou antlers of other species... |
RE: help with caribou hunt
True enough about the woodland bou having smaller racks than the baron ground variety. All the racks that I have seen taken in the 3 years I went there were pretty nice. I doubt that there is abetter lookingbou than the woodland caribou. Their huge bodies and white shaggy mane topped with thick dark brown antlers are visible for miles. They make quite picture when you see them up close. I can tell you this.... from a table fare point of view they are delicious.
