Which would you get?
 

I mostly hunt whitetails and black bear with ocassionally elk which would be a better all-around cartridge a 7mm mag. or 300 mag. Please answer between these 2 calibers only .

Most are going to say the 300 with it's "ample versatility". Either one is plenty sufficient for deer thru elk. They both kick well.

300 WM, hands down. Then, if you wanna go hunt moose someday, you'll be set. I'd be lost thout a 200 grainer in my life.

Either will work fine. I prefer the 7mm mag. I hunt deer, elk and moose with it. I like the flat trajectory for my area and it will chuck a 175 gr bullet into the bigger game just fine. I am not one that thinks a 200 grain bullet is required for non danergous game, plus my shoulder can't take the pounding anymore, so the 7mm mag is the right gun for me. I have taken a number of moose and elk with 140 gr 270, so i really don't see the need to go big just for the occasional elk or moose hunt. If it's your bread and butter, fine but it sound like deer and bear are and the 7 will do all you ask it to and then some. It is really up to you.

If you care the price of ammo is the cheapest for the 7 of all mags.

7 mag, given those two choices.
Recoil can be pretty stiff with that caliber, even more so with the .300 mag.
7 mag is plenty. 140 or 150 for deer and 160 or 175 for elk.

The 300 mag is more gun. More knockdown power etc. However a 7mm mag is my weapon of choice and this is why. It will kill anything from whitetails to moose with relative ease but its lighter, less recoil, and the ammo is cheaper. Not to mention its real flat shooting. If none of the advantages of the 7mm appeal to you then I would say 300 mag.

They are both great cartridges, but I would probably choose the 7mm Magnum in your case. It shoots very flat as well. Good Luck

I like the 7mm mag. the recoil is more tolerable thus easier to attain accuracy.elknut.

I would pick the 7mm mag just out of personal preference. I' ve shot plently of deer with mine, and I' ve never had to use any tracking skills. Also, one caribou bull that only stggered a few yards before going down.
