Favorite Bison Cartridge?
Whether you've hunted bison or not, what would you like to take one with? The other day on tv I saw a guy drop one with a .30-30 neck shot. Tell me your top choice, and then what would your top choice be for a 300yd shot to drop one?

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
.340 Wby. Mag. Good luck.

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
.405 Winchester
Any good buffalo hunter should use a straight wall cartridge.;) |
RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
Either my 444 Marlin or 338 RUM. but most likely the 444.

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
I wacked two behind the ear with a 6.5x55 but that was just an execution. I would like to hunt one with my winchester model 71 open site .348

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
You probably won't need to take a 300 yard shot on a bison, but if I were going to I would want at least a .338 Winchester Mag; and I'd rather have an even bigger .338-.375 magnum.Anddon't try neck shots at 300 yards.

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
I would probably use a .338 win. mag. I have heard of them being killed with .204 rugers to the neck but I am not a fan of the neck shot. Bison are tough but not that tough. If a cape buffalo can be killed with a .338 and American Bison doesn't stand a chance.

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
...thats what I use, a 45-60. 213 yards, the best shot I ever made and

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
45-70, I'm a nostalgic guy when it comes to hunting bison, Id like to do it old school. I wouldn't shoot at one out past the effective range of my 45-70, but for arguments sake Id use my 30-06 loaded with 200gr Barnes TSXs.

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
444 Marlin... Since I already got one.. :D
|
RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
45-70. BTW a Cape buffalo can be whacked with a 223. For longer shots The 30-06 would be my minumum although the only one I ever shot was with a 30-30.

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
If or when I do hunt them it will be with a bow,I would think more were killed with it then any other weapon. [/align] |

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
45-70 w/ blackpowder cartridges.

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
Rem 416

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
![]() 45-70 :)Bullet went through the back of the shoulder and through both lungs at approx 75 yards. The bullet did not exit, but was found stuck in the hide when we skinned it (looked like a swollen pimple that hadnt popped yet). The bison wasn't small, im just 6'7" and make it look small :) |
RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
haha, was just thinking it looked small, nice!

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
Only buffalo I would consider to be hunting here in canada would be a woodland buffalo and the min I would take a 375H&H. I have shota few ranch bison using my compound bow, 270 win, 7mm rem mag and 338wm. These animals had no stamina nor posed any real threat so I felt safe in the choice or weaponon hand for the job;).

RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
I've taken a few on my buddies ranch and never had a problem putting one down at 110 to 115 yards with my Hawkins 50 Cal.. Never shot one from 300 yards. But my buddy who owns the ranch puts them down with his 30-06 with 220 grain at 200 quite often.
I took my Cape Buff with a416 worked great. But only got one shot one time. Can't wait to go back... Small matter of a few bucks.... Goatslayer........ |
RE: Favorite Bison Cartridge?
After recommendations to go for a head shot to put thebison down versus possibly having it run to the bottom of a steep river bed with a lung shot, I changed from my ironsighted 45/70 to a scoped Ruger #3 in 30/40 Krag. Needless to say, I still had to go for a body shot at around 200 yds. A 180 grn. took out a front leg and the heart and the buff didn't go ten feet before going down. I would still prefer a bigger bullet though.
