Colorado Mule Deer Hunt (Pics)
Just thought I'd share a few photos from my 07 Mule Deer hunt. I hunted the 3rd rifle season in Colorado. It was my first experience out West and I'm looking forward to going back.
I bought a self guided hunt. It took me a few days to find a good buck. Unfortunately I never got close enough. I got within 50 yards while it was on posted land I didn't have permission to hunt. On the last day, I decided to shoot a smaller buck. It was a great trip. I saw a lot of game. Here are a few photos: 4X4 I was hunting most of the week ![]() My first Mule Deer ![]() 6 to 8 hours a day! ![]() Colorado Farm House ![]() Muley Does - everywhere ![]() Big Horn Sheep! I was fortunate to get this pic ![]() Landscape ![]() Elk at first light ![]() Landscape 2 ![]() Pronghorn ![]() Landscape 3 ![]() |

GREAT PICS....If you don't mind my asking, how much did a hunt like that cost?

CPO player - the hunt was $2,300 which only included the license (land owner tag for zone 82) and lodging. The outfitter spent about four hours with me the day prior to the season. He drove me around to show me prime areas and provided me with topo maps and other advice. By the time you include airfare, food, rental of a 4x4 vehicle, gas, and additional gear (first time out west), it was closer to $4,500. Next time I'll drive out and keep itto about $3,000. I looking forward to a rematch with the larger buck that evaded me.

The outfitter was Palmer Outfitters at http://www.palmeroutfitters.com/.
I was hunting in zone 82 just north of Saguache pronounced (sa-watch). I took 130 pics so I'll post a few more later |

Allen - those are some good lookin pics. Just out of curiosity why do you go through an outfitter and pay all that extra $? There is an abundance of public land in most western states with over the counter nonres tags for cheap! ($260 in ID) It's hard to not tag out where I hunt in ID. My out of state buds usually always leave with 4x4's. Just a thought.

Hunter 5325, You are correct, there are many opportunities to hunt out west for much less. I could have purchased an over the counter Elk tag for $501 and hunted elk for a fraction of the price. However, the Mule Deer tags for this area take an average of 7 years to draw. I didn't want to wait 7 years. I was hunting a combination of private land, BLM, and Federal Land. I was also supporting the Rocky Mountain Elk foundation through the hunt. In the end, I had a great time and saw more game than I ever expected. Of course I would have liked to catch the 4x4 (first photo) on the land I had permission to hunt. When I took the photo, I was standing next to a fence that ended the property I had permission to hunt and the deer had just crossed onto private propety.

Great pics!
Looks like the 4x4 you were hunting most of the week (if I understood your post correctly) is a 2 1/2 year old buck. Did you see any older age class bucks on this hunt? Curious, since you paid for it and all.... |
RE: Colorado Mule Deer Hunt (Pics)
I did - I saw 8 bucks through the spotting scope - some 5x4's and a 6x5. All over a mile away on a private farm eating alfalfa. They had no intension of movign to higher ground. At least not while I was watching them.

Hey all your easterners.. don't look at those pics you'll want to move out west, we've got enough people out west already! [8D]
Truthfully though, those scenes are why I moved out west 25 yrs ago.. Unless somebody told you, they could have been takenany place fromthe rocky mountain front and west.. great country but it can be hard to make a living. |
RE: Colorado Mule Deer Hunt (Pics)
I don't plan to move there, but I'll definately be back to hunt. I'm planning to head out in 09 for a chance at a bull elk

Pretty cool, nice pics. Looks like San Luis valley. Some of the deer look like sheep and antelope too. Glad you had a good time.
