RE: 300 WSM and 300 Win. Mag
I'll second a lot of the above advice. 180g in either rifle.
I personally shoot the Barnes 165g TSX in my 300 WSM. It has killed several elk and a Buffalo, All one shot The WSM will probably be a 23-24" barrel. The 300 Win Mag will probably be a 26" barrle Handle both rifles and see which one you prefer. The difference in ballistics on game just isn't enough to worry about. A lot of reloaders perfer to reload the WSM over the belted magnum brass. But that is a personal preference also. |
RE: 300 WSM and 300 Win. Mag
IME the recoil between the 2 is often more with the 300wsmon the account of the weight/style of rifles offered in. However in a comparable weight and stylevery similar.
Both are capable of what your asking using premium 180 gr bullets. However if you want to user the heavier for caliber bullets then the 300 wm has the advantage. I reload for both and have found the 300wm easier to get shooting them wsm. Since I load for a number of belted cartridges..no bother here either |

RE: 300 WSM and 300 Win. Mag
Your 270 is plenty of power for bear , I have recovered 100's of bears , and shot placement is the key ,you mentioned it. The rug on the bear generally holds up the blood trail for a bit , Most of our bear hunters use a bow, I think your 270 can compete with that. Stay away from the scapulas as the meat on top (blade steaks ) is very thick and dense , place your shot a little further back . If you are at a good bait you will not be more than 20 yards and you will have all the time in the world .
Good luck. |
RE: 300 WSM and 300 Win. Mag
Iam just happy to see you looking to choose between these two fine tools.... matching the tools to the task at hand, rather than "just getting by".... good for you.
Personally, since I handload and like my rounds a little edgy, I would opt for the 300WinMag though nothing against the 300WSM. IMHO, the 300WSM is here to stay. More important would be to find the rifle that is just right, be careful of going too light of weight because of recoil and "pointing and holding" concerns.... neither of these are bigmags, but theycan bea little frisky, especially if you stack the cards against yourself. |
RE: 300 WSM and 300 Win. Mag
I would pick the 300-win mag.
