Is a Heavily Loaded .45-70 adequate?
Do you believe a heavily loaded .45-70 (Buffalo Bore or Garrett Ammo) is adequate for North Amrica's largest Beasts? The shots would be kept within 100-125 yards, and only premium bullets would be used (hard cast bullets at 1800-2000 feet per second).

That would be adequate for pretty much anything on this planet. Also look at Corbon ammo. They load a round that is designed not to expand at all, if you are thinking about that type of bullet.

I hope so. It is what I use for back-up while bowhunting and I am hoping to try it on a brownie this fall. I'll let you know how it works as there are some monster brownies in my neiborhood.

For anything on the North American continent, I'd feel absolutely confident using a new .45-70gov. To handle those extremely hot loads, it'd probably take a bolt action, or at least a new lever of strong manufacture, like a marlin, and a guy would need a bit longer barrel than I like on leverguns to get proper ignition and accuracy out of them, but I'd imagine if you hunted with a bbl longer than a rancher version, say a 24-28"bbl, you'd never have any trouble with accuracy nor power. Basically, the only limitation placed on the .45-70 anymore is the thin case walls and the fact that so many guys still have the old trapdoor rifles that would explode with powerhouse rounds, so all factory, other than garrets, are typically very weak compared to what the .45-70 is capable of.
Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!! |

Yes would be my answer .I'm loading a 300gr bullet and 52 gr of imr 3031 and shooting it in a 32" barrel . We chronographed this load in a 26" barrel and was getting 2000+ , Haven't checked the 32" yet .

Without a doubt, YES!
Go to the Garrett Cartridges homepage and read about how the African Dangerous Six (Leopard, Lion, Cape Buffalo, Hippo, Rhino, Elephant) were all taken by one man with his 45-70....it's a rather impressive story. |
