Semi-auto's Allowed in your state?

I was doing an IM with a guy from another bd and he mentioned semi-auto rifles were not allowed to hunt with. Just wondering how many states have this law? And what is your law reguarding minimun caliber size? Thanks.

Good Luck. Capt Brad.

Semi-auto shotguns are allowed in PA but no rifles. The shotguns can not be used for big game, actually cannot be used for deer or bear with slugs. No semi-auto handguns as well.

Semi-auto with a total capacity of five rounds is allowed for big game in Oregon . Min caliber is a centerfire rifle for deer and .25 caliber for elk .

In NM Semi-autos are legal, I believe it must be a .243 and up. Good luck.

A .230 or larger with a case length of 1.somethin or other, I forget now. Basically the only things shorter than legal are pistol rounds anyway, like .45acp, 9parabellum (aka...), .357sig. Basically, our law seems to be based around handguns, because although there is no law prohibiting use of semiauto pistols, the cartridge regulations ban them, while almost ALL wheelguns would be legal. It kinda sucks because a buddy of mine wants to use his 9parabellum carbine for deer, and he shoots it well enough out to 50yrds I'm sure he could get the job done (does dang well on coyotes out to 75-100 with it), but can't use it <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>.

Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!!

I've never heard of a state that prohibited use of semi auto rifles as long as they are bigger that .24 cal. Is there a state that restricts the use of a particular action rifle?

Ya can use whatever you like here i think action wise, big game cal. needs to retain 1000 ft lbs of energy at 100 yrs tho i think.
that excludes many pistols then.

Isnt at least half of NY state shotguns only?

Figured they would have gotten to banning those semi auto,s to by now. Guess not tho... chucky shumer must be busy elsewhere.

Semi's are allowed here in Missiouri. Basically we can use anything as long as; cap. not more than 11 rounds chamber and mag. combined. center fire {for deer}. can not be full auto.

Just have one correction. In PA special regulation areas do allow the use of semi-auto shotgun with slugs, and buckshot in another area. Other than that, like Rob said, no other semi-auto may be used. As far as minimum caliber goes I'm sure they have a minimum but I'll be darned if I can find it in the big game regs. It simply states manually operated centerfire rifles.

Unless I am really wrong PA is the only state with the distinction of not allowing semi-auto rifles that is.

Semi-auto rifles are allowed in Manitoba. No restriction on caliber size but must be center fire.

RE: Semi-auto's Allowed in your state?

In Pennsylvania, semi-auto guns of any kind are illegal for any big game hunting. However semi-auto shotguns are legal for turkey and small game. No semi-auto handguns either for hunting. I don't seem to mind though. The only reason I would find a semi-auto rifle suitable for hunting in PA would be for less recoil.

Walk softly and carry a big gun...or just make accurate shots.

For Oklahoma:
For deer:
Rifles: Centerfire rifles firing ammunition with a soft-nosed bullet are legal if firing at least a 55-grain weight bullet. Hollow point bullets are legal. Clips or magazines of all .22 caliber centerfire firearms may not be capable of holding more than seven (7) rounds of ammunition. Fully automatic firearms are prohibited.

For Elk you must have a 270 or larger.

They can outlaw all them self-loaders for all I care. It fellers totin' them BARs an' Remingtons thet shoot up the herds an' leave 4 wounded animals to ever one they kill. Happend last season. 20 rounds went off one mornin'. 3 fellers with BARs lit up a herd of elk an' kilt 2 bulls between them (they were fightin' over one of 'em when I got there). Blood trails everwhar. BARs are coyote feeders.
