5x5 IDAHO ELK - UPDATED

Finally after a couple frustrating archerymisses the faithful 8mm Rem Mag has done the job. Nice 5X5 Bull Elk. Checkout the pics.

Here is some details of the hunt.
The day started around 06:20 A.M. I hunt within 5 miles of my home. There is old clear-cut road that the elk and deer cross quite often. Close by is a nice water supply back in the timber, so thathelps. I sat for about 3hrs waiting. I didn't heara single shot all morning. Now things start to unfold. I wasglassing the area and noticed some other hunters about 1000 yards away heading into the timberin the direction towards the water supply. Not sure if they even knew about the water. After about 15 minutes Ispottedthehuge 5x5 bull elk coming out of the timber looking my direction.
Time seemed to stop 09:30 A.M. I steadied the trusy 8mm mag on the old boiler room. The elk was about 150 yards away. My shot echoed through the entire valley. Clearly I could see he was hit good and the big bull disappeared into the timber. He no more then entered the tree line and a nice spike elk came bolting past him on the run. Within 5 minutes the hunters I seen heading into the woods appeared in the openclear-cut looking everywhere for where the shot came from. I pointed them in the direction the spike had ran. Last I seen of them.
I waited well over an hour before looking for the 5x5. I found him appproximately 175 yards in the timber. Luckily I just installed a winch on my 4-wheeler. I was able to manuever through the timber and get close enough to pull him out whole. My wife and son helped. We loaded him up and rest is history. Truly a great day.

Good luck to all you fellow hunters!!

A good bull elk will run 700-800 lbs. Occassionally a really big one tops 1000.

So DoubleLung, How did you get him home in one piece? I have to cut mine in quarters or most often bone them out on the hillside.

I often laugh at friends I take elk hunting who have never killed one before. After I help them find and shoot an nice elk they approach the downed animal and usually comment something about. "I had no right hunting these animals in the past, I wouldn't have been able to get one out if I had shot one"

The elk we have harvested in South Colorado are usually around 600 to 650 field dressed weight for a bull and in the 500 to 550 range for a mature cow. I understand the Roosevelt elk are larger.

600 to 800 pounds is sure alot of steak on one of those... Thanks guys I have never seen one so I had to ask the question...

RE: 5x5 IDAHO ELK

I was refering to live weights, so your 600-650 field dressed is in line.

Good job and congrats on a great bull. I'm surprised you waited so long to go after him though, I'd worry that another hunter might have found him and tagged himfor himself. Here in Washington that stuff happens and I suspect it happens elsewhere too..

Thanks for the reply. Swimming pools work great for skinning. Easy mess to cleanup.

Power,
Thanks. The area I hunt has limited access, so I'm able to get a good vantage point. The last thing I wanted to do was stomp through the timber and spook him.

That is the nicest 5x5 I've ever seen.. has the regal look of a 6x6 with those long top tines. Sure wish I could have gotten close to the 7x7 monster we saw in Montana in September.

Congrads on a great animal.
