It depends a lot on the case behind the bullet.Generally the larger capacity cases require longer barrels to achieve maximum velocity.

It'll keep gaining velocity until the barrel is a lot longer than you can live with, somewhere around 10 feet of barrel length. Deciding upon how short to cut a barrel depends upon how much velocity you're willing to lose.
