First year Moose hunting
Looking for a little insight. I have been hunting a couple of years now for Whitetail in Alberta, and I have just received my first moose tag this year. I use a .308 with 150gr Core-lokts for Whitetails and have never had one travel more than 10 yards after the first shot. Do you feel this is sufficient for the moose?

RE: First year Moose hunting
what area in alberta you hunting? i just got back from there. i hunted 404.
oh and on you ? not sure i only bow hunt. sorry |
RE: First year Moose hunting
Personally, I prefer a heavier bullet in the 180 grain range.
|
RE: First year Moose hunting
the 150gr will work, but i agree, 180 gr is probably a better option.
|
RE: First year Moose hunting
For moose i use 180's. Where are u gunna be huntin in alberta.
|
RE: First year Moose hunting
The moose is relatively thin skinned and a 150 gr might work, but I would prefer something a bit heavier myself. A good quality 165 gr bullet will work (Supreme Fail Safe, or others) if you do not want to shoot 180 gr.

RE: First year Moose hunting
150's will definately work especially if your gun likes to shoot that particular bullet, but personally I'd perfer 165's or 180's for moose

RE: First year Moose hunting
I will be in the Nestow/Clyde area in WMU 505.

RE: First year Moose hunting
I say the 180 Grain is the best because here in the Northern parts of Manitoba?, i've shot with both and they've only made it thru the skin! and you don't want that. Good Hunting!!
|
RE: First year Moose hunting
Oh Yeah??,forgot to mention that the secret to it is you want the Energy in the Bullit and that means a heavier option of choice's!!!
|
RE: First year Moose hunting
180 grain.
They are big and tough animals, a little more stopping power won't hurt. Make sure you shoot a few at the range to ensure you are sighted in properly. The ballastics and trajectory may change, sometimes significantly! Good luck!!! |
RE: First year Moose hunting
Thanks for the advice. I decided to go with my 150 gr Core-Lockts and they worked great. Moose down in one shot. Now it is time to get my deer for the season

RE: First year Moose hunting
Congrats! Moose are large animals but they are thin skin. Where do you hunt?
|
RE: First year Moose hunting
I hunt just north of Edmonton, in Alberta. All kinds of animals up here.

RE: First year Moose hunting
Remington 788, congrats on your moose tag. I just finished a NH moose hunt w/ my cousin. We ended up baggin a nice 50" 750 lbs bull on day 8. It was the hunt of lifetime for me. The whole experience was awesome. From the area, hunting and people we met were great.
In regards to you using a 308. don't worry. I used mine w/ 180 grain core lokts in a Remington semi auto. at first I was skeptical w/ the 308. but was confident w/ my shooting skills and knew shot placement was key. But remember sometimes it just isn't that easy. none of the 3 shots we hit our moose were found. all exited. I tried 3 different bullets and got best groups from the core lokts. I had good success w/them for deer also. Besides if the my 308. didn't get the job my cousins 35 whelen would take care of it. I even brought out my 30-30 a few times during the hunt also. Best of luck w/ your moose hunt. You will enjoy it. J |

RE: First year Moose hunting
So many moose in Canada have been shot with the 303 that I am sure a 150 grain 308 will be more than suficient.
Personally Never shot a moose but have shot big bull elk with 140 grain 270.. My personal reccommendation to you is go Copper!! I personally think using a Barnes TSX with at any weight will be more than effective with the 308. And GOOD LUCK, I am hoping to get drawn for moose next fall and will be putting in as much time as possible with my bow during the rut. |

ORIGINAL: savage3006 Congrats! Moose are large animals but they are thin skin. Where do you hunt? Congrats on your moose and glad yourload worked out for you but personally I would have opted for something more robust then the corelokt. Where I hunt moose sometimes a shoulder shot is all that is given and an after the shot trot might make for several hours more work so I play on the safe side and use Barnes TSX's (or comparable). |
RE: First year Moose hunting
i use a 165gr. nosler partician bullet in 7mm
|
RE: First year Moose hunting
I agree that they are big and tough to skin just. What I meant is that I never had any problems with inserting a bullet into the kill zone and the 165gr are just fine. No need for 180.
