Smelling for elk??
Just wondering if anyone has actually found elk just cause they were able to smell them and tell which direction they were in since they can be quite the smelly animal. I know the first elk i shot i smelt them and i walked upwind and sure enough there was a herd of 20 elk and i took a cow out of the herd.

Darn right you can smell a bull. Works well in dark timber.

That's exactly the reason that I refuse to wear any of those scent wafers that smell like elk and I refuse to spray cow urine on any of my hunting cloths because if you do that, you're constantly THINKING that you're smelling elk, where as if you just go odor free, then when you think you smelled elk, you probably did. Happens often.

Hunting elk with your nose is a great way to hunt them. I do it all of the time.

You can also smell mulies in the thick willows during the rut. It's neat in -20 or colder seeing steam moving up a mountain knowing it's really a herd of elk and intercepting them.........................Harold
