Colorado elk/bear weapon?

I've noticed that the Colorado Elk bow season overlaps with the rifle bear season. Has anyone ever carried a rifle while elk hunting with a bow? This year onour elk hunt, we came across a large boar up at 12,000' and wasn't sure if we could get within bow range if I had a permit, which I didn't. We could definately get within rifle range and was considering putting inthe draw for next year.Is it legal to carry a rifle while bow hunting, with a legal permit forbear of course.

I don't think so, but you're allowed to carry a pistol, I think, or there was a law that was being considered to allow it, so you could get a .500 Magnum or something if pistols are legal.

In 'rifle' season you can carry anything you want.

This is what is confusing! A rifle bear season is running concurrently with the elk "bow" season. I feel it should be legal to carry a rifle during the bow elk season, as long as both permits are in hand.

I too came across a large boar (I assume) about 12,000' while elk hunting this year. In fact,me and my partner came across 2 mature bears in 5 hours in the same meadow. Next year I'm going to apply for the early rifle bear tag as my 1st choice, bull elk muzzleload for my second, and a cow as my third. If I get my 2nd or 3rd choice, I'll buy the over the counter muzzleload tag for bear and have one weapon for both. What part of the state were you in?

Apple, this was in the Maroon Bells wilderness area. We've seen alot of bear sign when we hunt there, so next year I'll definately buy a bear permit to carry along, just in case.

We were just north of Chama, NM on the Colorado side.

Yes, if you have a permit for both then you can carry both weapons in Colorado!

Yes, like huntquest said but you MUST have both permits in your posession.

Thanks for responding everyone! After reading the odds of a non-resident drawing the limited early season rifle bear tag, I figure it's not likely to happen, but I might as well be prepared. Thanks!
