7 mag bullet for moose??

Hi guys. looking for 1st hand knowledge of which bullet works for big moose. It is a savage 7mag. Rifle shoots 160 gr bullets great but seems not to like 175 gr slugs at all. It shoots the 160 gr accubond really well. Will this bullet work on moose reliably at close range to say 250 yards?? Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated. thanks. dcl

Accubond or Partition should be fine.

I shot a very large Canadian moose with my .280 Remington using Nosler 160 gr Accubond(handloads) at approx. 50 yards and was quite impressed with the bullet performance. I shot the bull high in the shoulder and he never took one step thereafter. I did put another finishing round in him as I approached the downed animal, simply because it was late evening and we were loosing light fast(probably wasn't necessary though). I recovered one of the slugs in the body cavity and it retained close to 80% of it's weight which at that close range I feel is very satisfactory. Neither bullet exited which is to be expectedconsidering the range, velocity and size of the animal. Thebullet is also remarkably accurate in my rifle as well, I believe it is the most accurate bullet I have tried out of about 6 different weights and styles i have tried. Good Luck, give them a go!

Barnes TSX (triple shock) You can get a factory load from Federal in a 160 gr. This bullet will do the job and then some.
Good luck!

Quality 160gr like OKgob said workgreat on moose(that's what I use and have had no issues yet)especially if your gun doesn't like the 175's. They have great retention at close range and still have plenty of power out to 250 yards with a well place shot

I use a7mm rem mag butas of yet never a175 gr slug on any of the moose or elk I have shot. Majority were 160 grs. I personally harvested a bull moose with a 160 AB at approx 100 yards, 2 shots were fired but only one was required as both bullets found the vitals! The bull did cover 20-30 yards after the second shot took out his heart but he was dead on his feet as both lungs and heart were reduced to mush.

All said i have since switched to the 140 gr barnes tsx for elk and moose. Its performance and accuracy has been suberb. I have harvested 4elk/moose thus far with this bullet and recovered one bullet in a bull moose that was shot at close range. In this case it was a 1/4 away and the bullet travelled thru the lungs before exiting the opposite shoulder and coming to rest in the hide. Weight retention was over 90%, expansion was over double and very little meat damage. While Ihave long been aNosler fan the TSX has been to impressive not to load it for larger then deer game.

Stay with the 160's. I personally have never had to take a long shot, or been with someone who took a long shot, at a moose. Have always been able to get well within200 yards of them. Therefore, a 7 Mag loaded with 160 grain "premium" bullets will more than do the trick.

I have seen similar performance with the 140gr tsx. This fall,I hope to test the 140gr mrx in my 7mmstw.Construction is far more important than weight. With the right bullet,140gr is plenty for moose.
