How To Find Ltd. Draw Areas for Elk and Muleys?

I want to start applying for preference points for future elk and mule deer hunts in the western U.S. and Canada. Problem is I don't know where the good areas/units are. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I am in this for the long term, God willing!

Homework!!! That's the best way to find a place to hunt. Some states don't offer preference/bonus points for elk. The biggest hurdles I've found in hunting out of state is finding ground to hunt on. There are some good resources on the internet to get information on BLM and National Forest land. A few calls to state biologists may help too. Better start now though..Most states application deadlines are in April or earlier (Wyoming is Jan 31.) Elk hunting is addictive..you get on some elk one time and you'll be hooked for life!!
Alot of folks can't afford to buy a guided hunt, but that's a good way to get some exposure to elk hunting and maybe learn a thing or two if you can swing it.
Good Luck!!

I'll give you some good info but the only reason I can bring myself to do it is because I have a few bonus points already. If you draw the right tag Utah has some great areas and its on public land. The tricky part is drawing the tag. Look at the Book Cliffs, Diamond Mountain, Monroe, San Juan and Pansaugunt area. These are trophy areas with excellent success rates. These tags are extremely hard to draw, usually 1 in 50 or so on average. It is possible to draw every year but the more points you have the better chance you have. You can apply for a bonus point for $5 and the out of state tag runs over $500. www.wildlife.utah.gov is the web address and the application deadline is Jan 31.

As an american you won't be able to put in for most draws in western canada. Most draws are restricted to residents of the province or canadian residents.
