RE: First Antelope hunt. Need help.

If you draw a tag in Wyoming outfitters will be sending you all kind of brochures. They get your name from the "successful" list.

I presonally see no reason to hire an outfitter. That is if you stay away from the NE part of the state where theres little public land and ranchers charge a trespass fee. Might as well hire an outfitter as pay a trespass fee.

Any area in WY has enough antelope that you should be successful if you can shoot at the 250 yard range. Also you should be able to see at least 50 antelope a day.(probably more)

Tips.......... Get good bino's and be able to shoot at least 250 yards. Don't shoot offhand, get in a prone position or off a rock, fence post, sagebrush, shooting sticks.

for every law thats passed - alittle freedom dies

OTIS,
While a guide may not be necessary for the hunt, they are often the only way to gain access. The antelope isn't very large. A 115 pounder is huge. I'd suggest that if you do use an outfitter you find out what they consider a trophy class animal. Too many outfitters consider a 13" horn a trophy. It isn't. It just makes it easier on the guide so they don't have too work very hard at it. The antelope is a difficult animal to judge for trophy class, especially if you've never hunted then before. The length of the face or ear can help judge length of horn. A good book will help with a lot of info. One of the Jack O'Connor books may be the best ones around.

There is a lot of mystique and myth about antelope. Just like most people, I thought they were all shot at 400 yards. My first antelope hunt was a guided hunt in Wyoming. I made up a 6.5x06 rifle just for the hunt. I actually shot my antelope at 16 FEET. Another hunter on the hunt hadn't taken his antelope in the two days alotted. Stayed out with me when the guides called an end to the day at about 2:00 pm. He was using a '06 with a 10x scope on it. He got his buck at about thirty yards and could only see hair. The guides , who had okayed our staying, were not happy with use when we returned with 16" bucks. They both missed a heck of a tip. Excellent opitcs will be a great help. A good spotting scope may well save you a lot of time and effort. I contacted the outfitter before the drawings and was told which area to apply for.

Any mid-sized cartridge will work fine for antelope. Since then I've taken them with a .270, '06, 7mm-08 and a .280 Rem. all worked just great. Good luck. Let us know how it works out.

Otis, please see the "caribou meat" thread. I have a proposition for you that will benefit us both!

Otis -In all honesty with you being canadian I would go to alberta for your pronghorn. It is actually much more difficult for a canadian to take a gun into the states than for an american to take a gun into canada. You must apply a couple of months in advance and show your reason for taking your gun across the border. This law was actually on the books since the clinton era but has only been enforced since the terrorist attack. In addition you will not have to draw a tag in alberta if you hire an outfitter. The quality of antelope in alberta is actually quite good as well. The hunting methods and shooting requirements will be the same as hunting pronghorns elsewhere.

Otis-Alberta does allow nonresident hunters to hunt antelope. You can even put in the draw for a tag with a resident without hiring an outfitter but drawing the tag will take as many as 5 to 8 years. If you hire an outfitter they have allocations for antelope so no drawing is necessary. The fish and wildlife website is http://www3.gov.ab.ca/srd/fw/ If you are interested in a hunt you would be better off contacting the alberta outfitters association at www.apos.ab.ca

otis - You may find that the Indian reservations in the US are perfect for your needs. I suggest the Ft. Belknap reservation in Montana, or maybe Rocky Boys. Either way, your 7mm Rem Mag is nearly a perfect antelope cartridge. Not overkill at all. Shoot 139-140gr bullets and have a good time!
