As AKJeff said, it would make a difference whether I was actually HUNTING grizzly or hunting caribou with the thoughts of protecting myself against a bear if necessary..

If I were planning to hunt bears, I'd take the .375...It will work fine on caribou also and the heavier slower moving bullet will probably mess up less eating meat than the faster .300 mags, which are notorious as meat wasters...

If I were hunting caribou and did not plan to hunt bears, I'd flip a coin...Chances are you won't have any problems with grizzlies anyway...I've encountered many of them and they always beat feet as soon as they knew there were humans around... If a problem DID arise, the .300 mag would probably settle it promptly... Also, sometimes shots at caribou can be long, and you might appreciate the .300 mag's flatter trajectory

I donno, never shot one with a 30/06, thoughI have killed 2 grizzlies. The mtn variety was shot with .270 and 150 grain bullet. The coastal bear with a .338 and 250 grain bullet. They both were 1 shot kills. The grissly was exterminated in the USA with far less potent rounds.

Just trade one of them magnums in for a 30/06.
Why does the 30/06 crowd think that round is the be all, end all of rifles.

I shoot a 300 Win Mag, and my dad even fits into this 30/06 be all, end all club (55+). He can keep his old Ruger "Ought Six" and I'll stick with the Sendero in 300 WM.

I just wonder, why many on this site even have this viewpoint? Please tell me, what a 30/06 can kill, that a 300 WM won't?

That written, go with one of the 300 Mags.

I would take the Weatherby, good cartridge, but just be ready to give it a VERY thorough cleaning.

Hey Joe,
I'm from Somerset... Brooks are beautiful! I've hunted Caribou and Dall
sheep there for the past 2 years... Some rugged country...

Here is a pic of a 7ft that charged us... Enjoy the hunt..!

I lived in Princeton, which is in Somerset County, I believe, noce place to live, crappy hunting laws. That's why I like TN better, plus, I'm a native of TN.

Take either of your 300's, load it with 180 grainers ineither Barnes Triple Shock, Nosler Partition or aSwift A- Frame and hunt away. If you want to carry two loads in case ol' Griz has a bad day, load up some 200 grainers in the same bullets and see where they print in relation to your 180 grain sight in. Shouldn't be more than about a 2" difference. Hunt with the 180's and keep the 200's in your pocket. If the nedd arises to switch, do so and fire away!
Good luck up there, I hope your trip is a fun, adventurous success!

If you're going to be on both a grizzly and caribou hunt, why not bring both? Especially if you will be visiting specific sites for a specific quarry-you can just pick the appropriate gun for that day.

I would use the .375 as my primary gun and a.300 as backup. The H&H has about the same trajestory as a .30-06 so its still plenty flat shooting for your caribou. Every caribou I have taken has been at 300 yds or less. Grizzlies and H&H's are like ice cream & apple pie.
