Default Favorite Elk Bullets?

Looking for everyones input as to their favorite Elk Bullet.

I will be shooting 300 Win Mag. Thinking Nosler Accubond, 180 gr over about 76 gr. of RL-22. should give 3,000+ FPS. Good choice?

I know there are many and I am a newbie... Barnes, The Swifts (A-Frame, Scirocco) Noslers (Accubonds, and Partitions). Then the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. SO MANY???

For Elk, would I be better going with a smaller bullet (150-165) at a higher velocity, or a larger (180) at a little slower velocity?

180 gr. Barnes x, Nosler Partition, TBBC, Swift A-Frame, or Win. Fail Safe. Good luck.

First off let me caution you that 76gr is max(over according to Nosler)and likely be a compressed load. DO NOT START HERE PLEASE. I would personally start at 72gr of RL22 with 180grsand work up slowly watching for pressure signs. You may get to 76gr safely but since you said you were a newbie I thought I'd re-affirm the proper way to load develop.

Unless using a Barnes or similar bullet 180-200 gr bullets would be my suggestion in the win mag for elk. The AB will work fine. I'd give serious thought to 200gr ABas wellthough. Has a higher SD of .301 and BC of .588 that you should be able to realize 2900 fps area, good elk medicine in my way of figuring.

Good Luck

Thanks for the advice. Nosler publishes 71.5,73.5, and 75.5 (max). Reloaders nest has 2 higher loads, one being at 76, and the other 77 gr.

I went out and shot, groups of 5 and loaded these, 71.5, 73.5, and 75.5. No pressure signs at all on any of these. I have not shot the 76 yet in AB's but should be ok.

Up to 76 on plain ole Jain Winchester Power Point - 180 grainers. AND these grouped much tighter than the AB's. I thought that strange, being 1/2 the price, and a flat base... yet shot better than the Nosler AB's? What gives?

Maybe it was just me.. or the eyes, but I shot the Power Points after the Noslers... for practice....

Barnes TSX? Down from a 180? To the 165-168?

hinkleid, though I haven't had any problems getting the AB to shoot in a number of cartridges doesn't mean there aren't others who have not had the exact opposite reaction to them. Quite possible that your rifle does not shoot BTs or one of other possibilities like seating depth, etc. I'd try a 180 or 200 Nosler part. (flat base) and see how it is liked. If it shoots well...enjoy your hunt!!

Yes with the TSX you'd have no problems going with a 165/168 instead. I have killed both elk and moose with 140 gr TSX in my 7mm rem mag performance as good as any 160 bullet I have used for the same animals.

Jeff-MRP???Or referring to BarnesMRX by chance?

Hopefully I'll get to go on an Elk hunt within the next couple of years with my 7mm Rem Mag. If I do, I'll use either 160 grain accubonds or 154 grain interbonds.

I too am thinking of trying those MRX's. BUT, they are so expensive. Thinking around $30 for 20. I don't have a problem with buying these to use on game... just if I knew the load workup, and had my rifle already sighted to them! Guess it would not be too bad if you buy one box a season.

Then again, a buddy swears by Swift A-Frame for elk, and they are no cheapos either.
