My favorite two calibers are the 264 win mag for open country or plains hunting, or the good old 338 win mag for any thing in North America. If you can master the recoil of it the 338 in a lighter rifle . You will find it shoots as flat as your 270 but with considerably more knock down power... SHOOT LOTS AND HUNT EVEN HARDER BECAUSE THE REWARDS WILL BE WORTH IT!!!

My favorite caliber is the .375 H&H, it can take any animal presently walking the Earth in hunting situations.

I personally shoot a .325 WSM and it has taken several elk already and a moose and bear.

EKM,I am one of those guys that have only one centerfire rifle,and Im also one of those people who has very limited money that you talked about.But I am heading to CO this fall to hunt elk for the 14th time in the last 20 years.All of my hunts out there have been DIY hunts.Up till 2 years ago money wasnt a issue with me but a wife who ran up debts and than left for greener pastures has left me with nothing but a job to pay her debts with,so dont be so qiuck to judge people on wealth.To answer the ? you cant go wrong with 300wm

I would go w/ a 300mag of some sort, if they are ok for you then eventually take another step up. IF, and I sayIF money becomes a big issue you could useyour 270.IF, getting a new gun,scope,ammo,ect was going to prevent you fromhaving themoney to go on the trip. I have used a 270 and dont care for them as elk rifles. I think your on the right track in looking for a bigger cal. for elk.mannnn....those 270 guys arelike an autisic who bangs his head against the wall. Yes a 270 will kill an elk, no they are not ideal. go look at any 270/elk thread out there, there IS ALOT of disagreement on the 270 as an elk cartridge, that alone says it all. It is marginal, but will work. The poster HAS a 270 already and wants to upgrade. Let it be...sheeesh.

OK topic thread Whats my favorite cal. Mine happens to bethe Swed. 6.5x55! It will harvest anything in North America, nuff said and don't cry about. Buy or borrow one and see fer yourself! Fantastic cal. Kill elephants with it![:o][:-]:D

7mm mag. great balistics and the ability to use larger bullets (175g) for elk.
