what elk call do you think work the best???

Hoochie momma works ok, but I've scared off as many elk with it as I've seen. Could be me.
I'd recommend you learn how to use a diaphram mouth call. The red or white Primos call can be used for both cow and bull (with a tube). Heck I called a bull in this last year using just that combo. Estrus, spike squeal, and lost cow.

I own several diaphrams and have tried to use them (while driving) and they make me gag. I believe theycan accurately reproduce the elk language the best. But I can't use them in the field.
So, next best calls . . . the E.L.K., Inc power buggle, and the Primos Hyper lip single cow call. Very easy to use, and reproduces elk talk accurately.

I have never called a elk in with a hoochie mamma, the Primos single reed cow call or the cow girl.
BUT!!!
I have called them in with the Carltos squeeze me cow call,Primos Hot lips,Primos mouthdighaphramsRed,Blue and white, alos the Rocky Jacobson Pack bugle.
My favorite is the Red or Blue dighaphram.

I have a lot of elk calls[&:]ie: hyper lip single, hootchie, lead cow and calf, carlton fighting cow, numerous diaphrams, Elk inc bugle, etc Though ifI could only take one call elk hunting it would the Primos Imperial Plate Diaphram(red/double).

RE: what elk call do you think work the best???

Hoochie Mama without fail! It is the only call that if I am guiding a client I will let them blow unless they show me they can really blow an elk call! I really like the Primos Pack Bugle and the MacDaddy by HSCALLS. With the pack bugle you can sound like a young small satellite bull without fail and that can really piss off a herd bull if you are in close! The MacDaddy is a great call and has lots of options available to you and can even be pulled apart and turned into a small cow call! With the MacDaddy you really have to blow the heck out of it to get the tonality you want from it!

Virginia is about to have its first ever Elk calling contest so if you are anywhere in the area, come out to the WWW.VASPORTSHOW.COM and make an attempt at calling. For every entrant there will be a raffle ticket to win an elk hunt and from what I can tell the odds are going to be terrific!

Good Luck!

I have the hoochie mama and all the other hand held calls, but afterI learned to blow a diaphram call those calls went ina box to stay. I'm with skeeter, Primos Imperial red double is my favorite call. It means a lot to never have to make a move to make a call. My primos is in place constantly when I'm elk hunting. It took some getting used to but the gagging feeling went away.

game4lunch, have you tried using some of the newer diaphram calls with sound plates over the top of the reed? Primos and Carlton both make calls like this that are designed to keep you from gagging. I used to gag on the old style of calls, but I tried the Ivory Plate single and Imperial Plate double by primos and they both work well for both cow calls and bugles without making me gag. I like this a lot better than the hoochie mama because you can can do so much more to vary your sound.

I agree with the reed theory. If you put your time in and learn how to use them they are the most authentic/advantageous calls to use. I also like the Primos reeds, although I am only able to manipulate the single reed well. I have some buds who love the doubles though.

As far as hand held calls go I like the primos single reed hyper lip and the Woodswise. I keep two of each on me when bow hunting elk. In my opinion though, it's not the call, it's knowing when and how oftento call. I think most guys overdo it. You can get away withit moreif you are good on a reed.

I've used sceery for years too, but have finally quit carrying them because they are too high maintenance. I'm not a fan of the mechanical push calls like theHoochie Mamma. (I'll justify that by saying I think they require too much movement close in, and they are too big).

Hoochie mama, took 3 bulls useing it , 2 bow 1 rifle. I carry mine in the leg pocket of my hunting pants and when the elk are close I just use it still in the pocket.

RE: what elk call do you think work the best???

I generally have 3 with me so as to make some different sounds on the same hunt. I usually use them in this order, from most to least:

Primos double reed diaphragm
Primos single hyperlip
hoochie mamma

As most long time elk hunters will tell you, the diaphragm can't be beat. It took me a long time to ever master one. They don't make me gag, but always tickled the roof of my mouth. When they came out with the ones with an extra part that comes between the rubber diaphram and the roof of your mouth, that solved that problem.

If you haven't gotten Elknut's CD's about making elk sounds, you should. Best how to calling elk I have seen.

Yes, I use the terminator. Is it cumbersome? yes, but not any more than any other bugle. The trick when you aren't using it is to rotate it around behind you and let it rest on top of your pack when not using it. I don't think the terminator has the greatest sound (it can sound kind of squeaky) but it's pretty easy to learn and it can be good enough to fool an elk. When I finally learned how to use diaphram calls this year I just pulled the call piece off of the terminator and used the tube and my diaphram to bugle. If I want to try varying my sound or if I want a call that will be louder I just put the call piece back in and use it.

I use and have good luck calling with a Primos cow call, looks sorta like a clear green plastic duck call. Had good luck calling in bulls, just no luck killing one.

RE: what elk call do you think work the best???

Isn't that really the point of a good call as opposed to an average call. Sure the user has a lot to do with it but so does the call !!! It's the same with bugles that so many claim to work well, when in fact most aren't that good at all until you dump the external reed & use a mouth reed instead with the grunt tube!

As SilverTip says, he and many others get elk to respond but in many cases they just don't show. Why, because everyone sounds good at 150+yards. But as you get closer most any of us can pick out an imposter, either by crappy sounds or just saying the wrong thing, elk aren't much different! Now things change a bit if you're able to hunt primarily private land or ranches where they see little hunter harrassment.

Your absolute best type of cow calls are mouth reeds such as the Scream N Tormentor or the Ivory Plate. For external cow calls Hyper Lip Single --Estrus Whine--Fighting Cow Call--Cow Talk--Whose Your DaDDy--ones like these have great sound tone, of course one must practice & perfect his own unique sounds. From chirps & mews to pleading or simply inviting a bull or cow to you! Then there's distress sounds lost sounds seperated sounds excited sounds & so on. If you don't know what each sound is by just hearing it then how do you know what sound you're relaying vocally to other elk. This is where most callers go wrong, the right sound & patience to wait for elk to show are key factors, much more so than a great call or medocre call.

Good Luck!!---ElkNut1

RE: what elk call do you think work the best???

I just got back from my first elk calling contest and I got to judge! I had a ton of fun and learned a lot and got to meet some really wonderful people! I heard some really amazing callers and I also heard a couple of really bad callers. To be honest no one really cared because for $25.00 each of the contestants got a chance to call for 2 minutes and then they all got entered into a raffle to win a $4500.00 elk hunt with Kootenai Outfitters in British Columbia. With eleven hunters the odds were fantastic!

The best caller in the place was the one who won the youth contest and he was absolutely fantastic. We also had a really great young girl who won the pee-wee division and at 6 years old she would could blow a call!

RE: what elk call do you think work the best???

BTW: The best call you can have is the one you blow well and are willing to practice with! No call is ever going to be perfect if you are not willing to practice with it and listen to a ton of natural elk bugles and mimic the sounds that you hear!
