Looking for a .500

Hello everyone. I'm new to this website and I have a good question for you to start out on. I'm currently looking to purchase a rifle in the .500 cal and uprange. Can anyone tell me what companys make a rifle for this caliber. I'm not really looking for anything bigger than a .550, so the big .600's and .700 holland and hollands are out. Any help would be greatly appriciated. If I cannot find anything within a reasonable price range I was looking at the .450 Marlin, the .458win., ,or the .460 weatherby. Thanks.

Your best bet, would be to get the 45-70 or .450 Marlin, they are a lot cheaper, and more common, than the .460 WBy or .500 NE, that you mentioned. I also wanna know, why do you want the .500 NE, and similar cartridges? Just for fun, or are you going on a safari?

Maybe he means .500 S&W, but that's a pistol caliber.

The only company I know of that makes the .500 S&W in a rifle isNew EnglandFirearms, and those are break-actions.

Well, I know it's just waisting money if you dont need it but I'm from texas and I believe bigger is better. I've always been interested in collecting guns and I think this would be a great addition to my collection. I do go hunting every now and then and would use it, so it wouldnt just be sitting in a gun case. If I cant find anything I will probably go with the Weatherby Safari model in the .460cal.

Angus, the cost of feeding these guns is outrageous, .500 NE ammo is as much as $200 a box, and .460 WBY ammo is about $100 a box, I don't recommend purchasing a rifle in one of these calibers. You would be much better off with a 45-70 or .450 Marlin, the big .460 WBY, and NE calibers, should only be reserved for the person who makes a living hunting in Africa. I live in Texas, and can tell you this, there is nothing in Texas that a 45-70 can't kill. Sometimes, bigger isn't better, sometimes, bigger is just too expensive to justify owning, unless you hunt Africa.
