Creede Colorado area. Looking for Elk info.
 

My brother was just out visiting the Crede, Co. area and said its good Elk Hunting in that area. I heard its a draw area. There are some things I'm wanting to know about the area. What unit is it in? We're looking into archery, so how long does it take to get a tag? We would probably look into a semi-guided/drop camp type of hunt (one thats not going to break the bank). A lodge/cabin would be ok to. If you have any ideas on an outfitter, just pm me or let me know. Thanks for the help.

unit 76. It is a draw unit and will take about 5 years to draw a tag. Of course, in 5 years, it may take another year or two to get that tag!

Unit 76 is an excellent elk unit, but takes a few preference points to draw...When I hunted there a couple of years ago it took me 10 or 11 points to draw a NR bull muzzleloadertag...Archery was somewhat less than that, but it seems it was at least 5 points for NR archery..

We rented a cabin from a local rancher and hunted on our own on National Forest land...Had a great hunt...Of three hunters we took a 6x6 and a big 5x5 and our third guy passed several legal bulls but was holding out for a slammer and did not fill his tag.... After learning the area, I wish I could hunt it every year, but it will take me a few years to draw another tag...:(...

If I think of it, I'll dig out my file and post the rancher's name that we rented the cabin from..He was also an outfitter , but we did not use his outfitting service, just stayed at one of his cabins (cheap) and hunted on our own... He had offered to pack an elk out anywhere in unit 76, but both bulls we killed were close enough to forest service roads that we packed them out fairly easily by ourselves...

bnzartman...I have looked around for my file with my CO info in it and cannot find it..I think I loaned it to a friend and never got it back...

In any case, don't hestitate to call the local DOW people in Creede ( or any other area in CO)and inquire about the hunting..They were EXTREMELY friendly and helpful to us when we hunted out there a couple of years back...

I did a little searching and here it is...

The RC Guest Ranch on Rt 149 west of Creede...We stayed in a rustic but very adequate log cabin with soft beds, hot showers and everything we needed..I think it cost us $25 per person per night...Cheap...Elk bugled every night right behind the cabin...The mountain behind the ranch is National Forest and we could be hunting within ten minutes of leaving the cabin..

The owner's name is Ted Dooley..Although we hunted on our own, he outfits drop camps and ( I believe) guided hunts...Even though we did not use his outfitting services, Ted helped point us in the right direction to get our elk...Good guy...
