I would avoid the 3rd season if at all possible. I went to Meeker in 1996 and we did a drop camp, we did see elk but they were very spooked by then and we came up empty. You have to remember that those elk are being hunted since the last week of August and by the 3rd firearms hunt they know the game. I would suggest the 1 st rifle if anything.

well we go late season in dec and the elk are smart but if you know what you are doing you will be fine and avoid stupid mistakes

Look up Sombrero about their drop camps. Good outfit. You must be able to ride a horse up to camp. 3 to 5 miles. Go 1st season or 2nd. You might be hunting dark timber depending on the weather and moon. I did not take my 44 mag S&W and wished that I had. Look up Sombrero on the internet and call them. Hard to take to the head guide. Always busy. They are the real deal. I think they are in GMU12 west of Yampa or NE of Meeker.

I can recommend Crazy Horse Outfitters here in Pagosa Springs CO.
