Took a 12 Point today!!!!!

Yes, on opening day, I took a 12 point, I was using Ruger # 1 .458 Win Mag with light 300 Gr. handloads at 1700 FPS. I set in front of a tree overlooking a small holler', when the deer came in I shot him at about 57 yards, dropped on the spot. dressed out at 145 lbs.

Depends where it is. Aparently in some parts of the country if you shoot a 6 x 4 youcall it a 10 point. If you called it a 10 point in Montana you'd be laughed at.

caselesss5 11-11-2006 11:41 PM

RE: Took a 12 Point today!!!!!

right but in general whitetails go by totals not sides....i think it depends on populations of deer in the area like here in idaho we have very few whitetail so if you say you got a 12 pointer you know its a whitetail and a 4x4 would be a mulie....but your right where montana has lots of both the more details you give the better off your gonna be

WOW!! That's a nice buck!! Congrats!

Shot placement was not bad either, looks like you aimed for the heart.

Are you going to get your 12-point mounted?

Chantecler111 11-12-2006 12:45 AM

RE: Took a 12 Point today!!!!!

Yes, I will have it mounted, it will sit right next to my 14 point of the '02 season.

Huh? Are you sure you're in Idaho? You sound suspciously like an outsider. Let me guess, you're from SE Idaho. That would explain it.

Where I hunt in Alberta and Saskatchewan,we call any buck a 4x4,5x4, 6x6 etc.and give a roughB&C score. If someone calls a 4x4 an 8 point,we know right away that he isn't from around here. And unless it is a first deer,or he is a young hunter,if he gets excited about any deer scoring less than 140 B&C,he is definitely not from around here.:D

Naw, stubble I'm from America, aside from my adventure with Okanagan Outfitters a few years ago, I've never even been to Canada.

It sounds like you found a nice buckdown south, but you really owe it to yourselfto get up here for a whitetail hunt. You won't see as many deer as you would down south, but the size will amaze you.

RE: Took a 12 Point today!!!!!

Actually, my dad is from Nebraska, and in Nebraska they judge the points from one antler. For example, if it's a regular 12 point with a 6x6 set, then they call the buck a 6 point. Of course, when it's a non-typical with uneven racks, then they say 13 point, or something like that.

That's how it is here too. You can always spot an outsider a mile away, we call them "walking Cabelas catalogs".

nice buch there bud. What is with the hub bub about what count it is.Depends if you are going by eastern count or western count.Eastern count it would be a 12 pointer.Western count it would be a 6x6..Anyway you look at it.It's a damn nice deer.

Well if you think there aren't any whitetail in Idaho then you are sadly mistaken and probably from down around Arco or some other such God forsaken place. ;)ie sheltered.

Nope born and raised Idaho. Utah is scary.

RE: Took a 12 Point today!!!!!

i didn't say there weren't any whitetail in idaho i said not many compared to mulies...some areas have more whitetails but in general mulies are greater in numbers

and im glad to here your from idaho ...ive had some guys on here from utah telling people how idaho IS and there not even from here

Christ people! This just proves my point from a couple of weeks ago. Everything is a G.D. Debate anymore. There are a couple of people on here that want to argue about everything. A year or two agoall the response would have been: "GREAT DEER" or "Congrats" Now its all about: "your wrong, and I'm right, Idiot", "i'm from the montains and your not." "your a hoosier".....Its 8 am monday morning and this site has my blood pressure up already.

Great 12 point. I call them 12's also, unless I'm in mixed company of the all knowing men from the mountain states then I say 6 x 6 for their sake. They, need as much help as they can get.[8D]

skeeter 7MM 11-13-2006 11:17 AM

RE: Took a 12 Point today!!!!!

They, need as much help as they can get.[8D]
That is how we feel about those calling them by total vs as they lay!;)I don't live in the mountains infact not a mountain to be found in my province but we do have some nice deer roaming its contents.

Here's an example if i told you I passed up a 15 pointer this weekend, you'd probably think I was stretching the truth or not to well. But how about if I said it like this? I passed 9x6 that would score 130's on saturday!! It actually happened I did passthe 15 pointer, who wasa 130 class young whitetail of which neither meet my criteria to pull the trigger! I like the vivid picture better than making it sound... well BIGGER.

Different strokes for different folks!!:D

RE: Took a 12 Point today!!!!!

Skeeter,

I wasn't directing that at you necessarily. I agree that your method is certainly more exact. I passed a 115 clas 5 x 5 and a 120 class 4 x 4 on saturday. still hoping for a 150 class buck, I really don't care about the horn configuration.[8D] Though a 150 inch 4 x 4 would be impressive. I seem to prefer big 8's to smallish 10's.(couldn't resist using eastern count):)

RE: Took a 12 Point today!!!!!

Shato, I know you weren't directing it at me but my point is morethis debate will never end as we can't deciede on a common configuration to use for whitetails. So it will always be a 10 vs 5x5 thing based on regional differences.

Good luck getting your 150 class, that we all understand!! Be itof 8 (4x4) or 10 (5x5) configuration;).
