RE: New to antelope hunting...

Thanks everyone for the help and tips! I only get to check the forums at work so I'll try and get caught up from the weekend.

The main reason I didn't hunt when given the oportunity was that I didn't have the equipment I felt I needed. i.e. spotting scope, rangefinder and I think the longest I've ever shota deer at was about 125 yrds. (Most of the time you can't see more than 50 yrds in the woods here) I'll be huntin' w/my 280 and game4lunch you are right, as stated above I don't get many-if any shots over 200 yrd shots where I hunt so I'm going to have to do some practicin' and get more comfortable w/that. I have never concerned myself w/such balistics in the past.

I did test my 'stalking skills' while I was therethis year. I had my camera and tripod w/me and Igot to within about 150 yrds of two bucks so either they have NO pressureon them or I might actually be able to have a shot at them. (one can only hope)

Ripstop, I grew up in VA ( Craig County north of Roanoke) and still hunt there but yeah now I live in TN.

Again thanks everyone for the tips and insight. I look forward to coming west next year.

Eastmans Hunting Journal normally has several good articles and complete sections every year on hunting and judging pronghorn. They always seem to take B&C Antelope on public ground in Wyoming every year.

It is a very good DIY western hunting publication.

I love talking antelope. That .280 will do great! One thing also to keep in mind, WIND!!!
It can get windy out on the plains, and a 140 gr .280 slug can drift 5" or more in a 10 MPH crosswind (which is considered by many to be a 'light5 breeze'). Federal has some really good ballistics info on bullet frop at long ranges, as well as wind drift. http://www.federalcartridge.com/ballistics/Ammo_Search.aspx?act=choose&firearm=1&s1=1
Also, most guys around here sight in their rifles to shoot 1.5 - 2" high at 100 yards so as to shoot more accurately at long range. You should be able to put that .280's crosshairs on the kill zone out to 250+ and still take a lope down.
