Go with 160 gr premium (TBBC, Barnes X, Swift A-Frame, Nosler Partition) bullets in the .280 or 180gr premiums in the .30-06. Both will do the job just fine, if you do your part. You might even consider a Swift A-Frame or TBBC 175gr bullet in the .280, although it is heavier than necesary. It hits with far more energy than a 180gr bullet from an '06, and shoots flatter, and these bullets in this weight will absolutely hammer elk at all reasonable ranges.

hey beaverhorn i've been hunting for about 30 years now and 25 of them with my 30-06 if that many years of hunting makes me a green horn then so be it but if after 25 years of reloading and shooting my OWN gun then i guess i don't have any reason to be hunting if i can't hit that little killing spot. but i have taken my share of elk with 150 grn bullets. so before you put your foot in your mouth maybe you should maybe get more info on the person before you condem ME. i'm not saying that 180 grn bullets should not be used i think that they are probly better for elk but so are the 150 grn bullets.{}]

Nuthin' personal Dart. Only so many times you can say the same thing 'thout spicin' 'er up a lil. Ifn you had good luck an' ain't left no three-legged cows out thar (thet you know of) with yer puny jack rabbit bullets, then more power to ya. Jus' so you know there is a standard fer this subject, an' it exists fer a good reason. I stopped carryin' sand bags an' a bench with me on hunts a long time ago. Usin' a realistic cartridge/bullet combination an' shootin' unner real huntin' conditions is much more satisfyin'.

if you shoot your rifle as much as i do then you can hit that little kill zone, and after 25 years i think that i know what my smith will do, be it 125 grns, 150, 165,168 170 or 180 grn.

if you were just trying to get my goat then you did a REAL good job.

Most bulls I seen die took some killin'. Several walked off with lil' bullets tucked in their shoulders. Placin' shots ain't realistic unner huntin' conditions, least not to plan on it fer yer killin' ability. Ain't nobody too old to learn. Learnin' hard or learnin' the easy way is yer choice. Jus' don't 'spect me to let some newbie swaller up yer bad advice 'thout speakin' up. A 150 from a 270 is marginal, requirin' a very good hunter with all the time in the world to fill out, a perfect opportunity, an' no buck fever. A 150 in a '06 ain't fer newbies. Sorry, but I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

well oldt man maybe if you shot enough shells thru your long stick maybe you could shoot as good as i do. if you aim just behind the shoulder at the LUNG AND HEART area and not at the shoulder then the bullets might not hit alot of bone and hit a vital area like the HEART AND LUNG maybe even 2 lungs then you can use a 150 grn bullet like i do. but if you keep making 3 LEGGED ANIMALS with blood comming out of their noses and comdemming the likes of me for something that you can't accomplish then WAKE UP AND SMELL THE DOG POOP and or smell the coffee.

oh yeah and the last bull i shot was at 20 yards, 1 shot and it ran another 20 yards and dropped with 150 grn bullets. can you still get that close???????????????? or do you have to take a shot from 200-300 yds?????????
