In my opinion i would choose from the 264 win, 270,270wsm,280, any of the 7mm mag, any of the 300 mags, all the way to the 340 wby...

But my choice i would pick would pick the 270 the 7rem or the 300 win mag... Good hunting.....

I use a 7mm remington magnum for elk, 300's and 30-06 are great too, but the 7mm is the best of both worlds.

Any cartrige that can drive a 160 gr bullet(or heavier)faster than 2800fps,be less than 6 inches low @ 300 yds witha 2 in. high @ 100 sight-in.
That would mean the 280 rem,7mm RM,30-06 spring.,any of the 300 Mags on up to the .338 cal mags.
My choice ofa cross over rifle would be the 30-06 it can be a DEER/ANTELOPE rifle or it can be a ELK rifle with 165 or 180 gr bullets.

Any 7mms and larger; I'm not saying 260s, 270s, 257s etc. won't kill elk, I'm saying you don't get good bullet construction in these calibers for elk.

30-06 fora run of the mill (and totally satisfactory) recommendation.

OR (for those who like to kick it up a notch),

Screw the deer thingand just focus on what is better for elk.... say 300Mags thru 338Mags (and let the deer just "go along for the ride").

These are quite satosfactory for the occassional Bambi (withentertainingimpact results as a bonus) and really dish out the punishment on elk.

My vote is 300 Win Mag.
I use 180 grain Accubonds for Elk and 150 grain Nosler BT for whitetail.

Good luck.
