YOUR 2006 HUNTING TRIP

Elkshed made a great point about getting excited for the upcoming season. So, let's here when and where you are going hunting this year and what method of take you have chosen. Maybe we can keep this posted for awhile and everyone post their pictures when they return of thier animal and the area they hunted in.

I have been on one trip already this year which was a turkey hunt in the Black Hills of South Dakota. My second trip will be the first week of Sept bowhunting for elk in CO. This is my first trip out to CO with a bow and I'm pumped. I've been shooting out to 60 yards with much success and have been exercising a lot. I will be going with two guys that have never even seen the mountains before!! I'm shooting a 65lb Bowtech, andCarbon Express arrows tipped with deadly G5 Montecs. 3 weeks, 20 hour drive and a 4 mile hike and I will be there!! How about you guys?

RE: YOUR 2006 HUNTING TRIP

My first trip this year was to take my two grandsons fishing in Alaska. I highly recommend this trip. One of the best. We caught salmon and rainbows. But if you plan on going more than a few yards off a regular path you had better take a 44 mag or something bigger.

My son-in-law and I are also going elk hunting in the 3rd combined rifle season in Colorado. Going to the Meeker area. Been there several times before. I'll be using a 300 WinMag with NP 180s. My son-in-law uses a 7mag with 165 NPs. This will be a guided private-land hunt.

Both of us will have OTC bull tags and he will have a buck tag also.

We are trying to get out as often as we can to do some target practice but the heat here keeps us from shooting as much as we would like. The shooting range does not open until 8:00 in the morning and by 9:00 its too late.

Hope everyone has a great hunting season.

RE: YOUR 2006 HUNTING TRIP

10/1 thru 10/9, I'm heading to Fernie, BC to chase elk with Packhorse Creek outfitters. My tag also includesa mulie & a wolf.

I've neverhunted elk before, but I'm in more than decent shape physically, and I've been spending a goodly amount of time at the range.

I'll be sportin' a 700 CDL in .30-06, which has expressed a taste for 165 grain Hornady Interbonds. I'm going to try my damndest notto try any shots past 300 yards.

Best o' Luck to All!

Elk hunts around home in western MT:

2-4Sep Four day bivvy sack hunt.

9,10Sep Backpack in and set upmy base camp for the main event.

16Sep-1Oct Sixteen days of bliss.

I'll pass up all cows and non P&Y bulls until about the 20th, then after that it'll be tag filling time. I didn't get an elk last year, so I need the meat. Saw three 300+ bulls last year plus two more of P&Y quality, all within 50 yards, but nothing in my 30 yard range (except for the 270 bull I passed up on the third day of the season).

Lord willing and creek don't rise, bring it on, git 'er done, etc.!

RE: YOUR 2006 HUNTING TRIP

We (2 person party) are leaving the Motor City for Montana on Oct 19th & staying till Oct 28th.

We will only shoot brow-tine bulls, and nice deer since we will have the extra work of packing & shipping the meat back.

I'm shooting a 30-06 with the new XP3 bullet, and Russ is shooting a 300 Wetherby. We are pretty much dialed in at the range already.

We are likely to be on foot, so we struggle with getting an animal out. Our plan is to a) find a local to hire if possible, or b) buy a cart and wheel the thing out ourselves.

Actually the hardest part for us is figuring out where to hunt since we have never been there before. We are not using an outfitter so we need all the help we can muster.

Good luck to all & be safe.
