Bow-arrow elk combo>?
 

Hey all,
Just a question,I have two bows that are set-up for fall.My question is everone seems to think 400 gr arrow is the start point for elk.

I have my Tribute set-up like this 78 lbs,29.5 draw,rip-cord fall away,Copper John 5 pin.
I'm shooting Cheeta hunters @ 27 3/4 with blazer,100 gr slick Tricks weighing 392 gr.I chrono'ed it last night 4 shots @ 328 FPS.
According to Gold-tips site I'm getting 93.67 Ft/lb of kenetic energy.

My other one is my Mathews SB,29 w/loop set at 72 lbs,WB,MT Dusk devil 2 sight.
Shooting Nudge 55/75 shafts,4 tru-flight feathers weigh @ 376 gr w stingers,or 401 gr with Wasp 100 gr 4 blade.I chrono'ed last year @ 281 fps @ 397 gr arrows.
Do you all think my arrow weight is enough??

The first one would punch through just about anything and either one would punch an arrow clean through a moose, so I guess you're fine on an elk! Just remember, as with any game, stay away from the shoulder blade.

With that light of an arrow and those speeds your arrow will probably just shatter at impact.

Just kidding of course,with a 400 grain arrow with a fixed broadhead with that kind of kinetic energy you'd penetrate just about any critter. Just curious, but with your speed and arrow weight it does appear you could add some arrow weight, still get 300 fps and probably get even better real world penetration. I have seen far to many animals hit with fast/light arrows compared with real heavy/slow arrows to not understand that the added weight does create "punch". Youhave plenty of punch, but I bet you could get more out of it and still have a real flat shooting 300fps set up.

I don't know much about your mathews set up. But I do agree with MA Jay. Heavy arrows penetrate better than light fast ones. You've got the speed shooting 328 FPS, why not go with a heavier arroww??? 78 lbs and 328 FPS, your good for cape buffalo with a heavy arrow and 2 blade broad head!!

YES! Most of us that shoot similar arrow weight don't have that much speed!!

Either KE is great, my biggest concern would be is what is your FOC. I like to run at 11-13 % on my hunting gear. I find that around the 260-270 fps mark makes it so I can twist on any broadhead and get the same point of impact. All of my bulls except for 1 have been killed under 20 yards so 1 inch or less at 20 yardsdifference in point of impact from a slower arrow to me does not make a difference. I am shooting around 73 foot pounds with a cut on contact head, this usually blows clean through anything I shoot. I like to shoot a 4 inch helical vane also. The tip leads the way and the vane keeps it on track. I don't like to compromise either. Speed is great, but if the arrow is not flying straight at the time of impact, your penetration can be impeeded.Glad to see you doing your homework well before the season though.
