ORIGINAL: BareBack Jack

You might be better off going with a spike camp or have a outfitter pack your gear to your destination and hunt on foot from there. Then you can have them pack out your gear and animals, granted all this for a price.
If you are serious about packing you would be better off paying a good guide school 2700 bucks and learn the tricks of the trade, alot better than any book.

This would be the best way if not exp with horses while hunting...

A good book to look for at your local Barnes & Noble, Hastings or Libarary.
The author: Joe Back,
The book title: Horses, Hitches & Rocky Trails.
This is a short fun to read book for any level of rider.

You might look into drop camps? One other option is to hire a outfitter to pack out your elk.

I looked into renting horses last year. The two outfitters I checkedwith wanted too much money for me.I could have done a drop camp for the same price.

Good luck,

Kraton, Sounds like you are getting the horses? Horses sure do save your legs & boot leather.

Good luck hunting,
