Do you get pass throughs?
 

Do you guys get pass throughs on your shots on Elk?

I have two friends,one shoots a 300 win mag 180 gr bullet,the other shot a 338 with a 210 gr bullet.And neither of them passed through the Elk.The bullets were foundagainst the inside hide.They had mushroomed perfectly and held their retention.

I was surprised that they did not pass through.Neither bullet had hit shoulder bone either,just chest cavity and a rib bone.They are one tough animal.

It's not how big the Deer,But the size of the experiance that matters!!

I shoot a 30/06--180 grain bullets--"Core-lokts or Hornady". To be honest after I shot---- The work starts, I really have not paid that much attention. I'm busy getting the hide off, quarter the elk & looking forward to that LONG PACK OUT !! 9 times out of 10 it's uphill !! I don't think I do get many pass thru's. I do know that the heart/lungs are generally blood pudding.

Heres a pic of the .44 cal sabot from my .50 cal muzzleloader.That i shot my elk with.It also was against the inside hide.But it never even touched bone,went right between the ribs

I use Barnes XFB 250 gr bullets in my 340 Wby Mag. on elk, and all have passed through; the furthest shot was 200 yd. though. Good luck

A friend of mine told me he was going to use his .243 for elk. He uses factory loads. After convincing him to use handloads, he killed an elk with a Nosler 100 grain through the heart. The bullet was against the hide on the off side.

The only bullet I have used on elk that did not pass through was a 130 grain Barnes X. I shot it almosts straight on. It was the fastest kill I have experienced so far. Two were with Nosler 7mm and both went all the way through. Also I killed two with 260 Nosler .375s. Both of them were pass throughs.

I shot an elk a few weeks ago. One passed and one was just under the hide. The first shot was at 350 yds and the second at about 150 yds. I used 150 grain nosler partition handloads (3100 fps) out of my 7mm mag. This was the first time I used this load for elk, I usually use 175's. But the bullet I dug out mushroomed really well in the front section and the rear section of the bullet was completely in tact.

2 of 3 hits on my last elk went clean through. Both in the back part of the body (no bones). 3rd shot was in the neck and it too came out after snapping the neck.

What i have gather here for myself is this....
I'm thinking they were shooting a lighter weight bullet in a fast shooting gun.The bullet is mushrooming correctly,but loosing it's energy to quickly.
Shooting a heavier bullet adds enough energy for the pass throughs.Which i like for easier trailing,and i just feel better about getting complete pass throughs.

That .44 cal sabot i use was 240 gr.If i had used a 385 gr conical im thinking i would had a pass through.
