Thanks guys for your opinions and info.

The elk went about 100 yards across a meadow the first and about agood 75 yards the 2nd shot and by that time I knew he was a hurting unit and the 3rd shot he dropped. What an awesome sight to see through the scope.
I'm going to chalk it up as, atough animal, a tough bullet, and maybe a litttttle human error (shot placement;wind drift?)
Maybe I'll give the nosler partion a try and see how it shoots out of my rifle. Working on carabou now!

Thanks!
I shot the elk near Alder, Montana, which is in the south western part of the state.

Sorry but I need to add my 2 cents here...2 shots in the liver 1 shot in the lungs.. I don't think we're talkin bullet failure near as much as bullet placement failure...

I was just wondering why there was just 3 holes. Nothing for internal trauma other than a broken rib from the bullet, and not a lot of bon fragments. I thought there should have been more trauma from the energy of the bullet.
I"m not denying that next time I should try to blow up the shoulder.
Wellwhat the heck, thats one elk under my belt now! I can only learn from experience and take advice.
But thanks for your comments!

No reason to Blow up the shoulder and ruin good meat!!! a well placed heart lung shot will do the job!!!!!
