I shot my elk this year with the 30-06. I used the Federal factory loads loaded with the barnes triple shock in 180 grain. One shot kill. They are very acurate and they do awsome on elk. I recovered my bullet under the hide on the off side after it went threw a rib going in and threw the shoulder on the other side. Bullet looked like the ones you see on the barnes web site--perfect expansion. I shot some 3/4 inch groups at 100 yds. so the acuracy is very impresive also.

The other thing you might want to consider is the availability of ammo. Some of these calibers get awfully specialized, but you always know that at midnight you can pick up some 06 ammo at walmart.

The 06 is an excellent choice. Please don't take 400 yard shots though. Even if a rifle has enough punch, getting that little bullet into the right place is infinately more difficult at that distance.

Myself and my hunting partners use a very simple rule in setting our own limitations on shot distances. We do not take a shot at any game animal unless we have practised regularly on targets and are able to consistanly place our bullets in the kill zoneat that distance. If the hunter onlypractises to 200 yards ,he will notattempt 300 yard or 400 yardshotsat a game animal. We have far too much respect for the game that we hunt to take shots at distances that we have not proven ourselves at.
