Low cost elk camp

We had one of the guys bail this year, so we thought we would offer the opening to someone out in cyber space. We are a group of guys that have hunted together for many years, and have a well furnished camp, with a low expense because all the gear was paid for years ago. In a nut shell, everyone kicks in 220.00 dollars for camp costs, i.e. food and propane and such. Everybody is on there own for other costs, like travel, liscense/tags or whatever they think they need. If anyone is interested, e-mail me at [email protected], and I will answer all questions. We are NOT guides/outfitters, and this is NOT a business in any way...just a group of friends that hunt elk together with some room in camp.

For all you guys that dream about that "out west" without breaking the bank to goelk hunting , you won't find an offer much better than that.

Frozen, make sure you communicate your expectations of anyone entering your camp including: When the money is due (and how), snoring the house down, wanting to arrive late/leave early, etc. etc. A very generous offer, but don't get abused --- some times no good deed goes unpunished.

Good Luck

Elk gave you good advice!
Frozen, sometimes if he is a good outfitter hewill have
different guides go with you. Be a good tipper to these
guys if they gave you goodservice. These guys are on
salary and have families also.

Thanks for the warm words of advice EM, but after putting this camp together for over twenty years, trust me when I tell you I have the t-shirt already. It is really stunning what people expect, and these are people that know each other, talked about the camp, what it will be like...etc. I love it when they get to camp, are stunned to find out that there are camp chores, and asked which one do they want to do! We thankfully have never had any real issues, as most people that get an invite are of the how can I help type, and get right to whatever needs doing.

?????????

Reb,

Probably ought to read the first postmore diligently.
You missed it completely, not even close.
What is describedis not an outfitter/guide/client situation.
Perhaps a case of going for Post Quantityat the expense ofPost Quality/Accuracy.

Elk, we have exchanged PM's already. Thanks.

I know all about outfitters, I've been your way
3 times, Canada 4 times, Venezula 2 times,
Argentina 1 time, Spain 4 times and hunted in
the Philippines. I really don't need a lecture on
outfitters, Thanks.

Thanks for the invite as a non-resident. I've been to Rifle

Frozen..........I hear ya experience. One piece of advice though. Think about getting them to sign some contract/liability/confidentiality agreement???
I have adapted the one I have used at all my home barbeques for our elk camp. Basically, it states that once they taste my smoked brisket, they can never move in to my house without my knowledge or express permission!!! They can not go home and beat their wives senseless for them not measuring up!!! They will not stalk me or hound me incessantly for my cooking techniques! And they can never, ever, under any circumstances offer "personal" favors in order to secure any of the leftovers!!!! :) Fan worship can be an ugly thing in an elk camp!:D
Good hunting!

THANKYOU RED!!!!! I laughed my butt off on that post of yours. People are really giving Rebel a bit of hell, he just missed it, the post meaning that is. Of course, if we were sitting in camp somewhere, and someone blew it that badly.....well hell would be coming, no doubt about it. Thanks all for the posts, but give Rebel a break now.

Whotheguy has shown me a big error on my part, failing to mention what state we are hunting in.....it is Idaho. Sorry everyone!

Frozendisc,
I am pretty impressed with what you guys are doing. Not too many would risk taking in unknown outsiders. That said, there is no reason to believe that the new guy won't be a great addition. There are many people who are just starting out or have recently moved who are looking to hook up with a new group. Nice to see this type of attitude. Wish I didn't live 1800 miles away :(

RE: Low cost elk camp

The lack of interest has me wondering, is it cost or is it location? Of course it could just be a timing thing, as we are very close, and most people have firm plans in place already. Oh well, thanks everyone, and the best of luck in the hunts you do!

I think it may just be timing!! I know I would jump on it, had I not just taken 9 days of vacation here in NV and being short handed at work right now!!(the money thing is nothing at that cost!!)That sounds like an awesome deal! Anyone who has a flexible schedule should jump on it!!

Them low cost DIY elk camps is best. Sometimes the luck aint the best, but gettin together int he high country is unparalleled. Good luck to ya.

I can't believe you guys don't have a list of people wanting to take you up on the offer !!!!!!!! Whats with you guys, instant elk hunt with experienced group !!!! If I had the vacation time I'd be jumping up and down. I did my first western last year for pronghorn and was mesmerized by the beauty of that country, will definitely go back someday.

Thanks Terry, we are pretty surprised ourselves by the lack of interest. We actually run a nice camp, and almost always have plenty of friends interested in getting a slot, but this late.....who knows.

I'm fromidaho. Your offer is something that not many people offer. Curious about dates & unit. I would be interested! Send me a email or PM. Thanks

RE: Low cost elk camp

Frozendisc,

Absolutely amazing that you are being underwhelmed with responses. After listening to folks complain about remote/away from home big game hunting being "the realm of the rich" and "if only it didn't cost so much I would go" and how "if you are hunting with a guide thenyou aren't really hunting"and "I'd do a DYI hunt if I could get some good guidance" AND THEN here is an opportunity that removes those obstacles for the most part..... and apparently no takers.

For some reason, it appears that thesuckle of the local deer patch provides a sufficient"big game pacifier" of sortsthat keeps most folks rightclose tohome.

Again, IMHO you are making an outstanding and most generous offer. The fact that there appears to be no takers may bea sign that you will be better off with a vacancy (besides, more room in the tent).

Good luck with your hunt.

Thanks for the offer!

I would jump on thisfor all of you flatlanders that complain about prices and not knowing where to go or where to start here is a gift horse.

If I wouldnt of just got back from Co. I would go. My posistion is I have to plan out ever hunt ayear in advance with a wife going to college and two kids one income .

But Iam truly greatfull for your generous offer becuase of guys like you Iam going on a winter caribou next year thanks to guys like you!

frozendisc 10-02-2005 03:31 PM

RE: Low cost elk camp

Yes EMaster, it is amazing that there is so little interest, but it is what it is. Saving space in the tent is irrelevant, as we limit camp to ten people, but have tent space for fifteen or more. The gear/camp is top shelf, with the local outfitter making accusations many years ago, but now knows we are a very helpful group if he is in a jam. I think it is just too quick for most people to take advantage of the opportunity. Oh well, snow is falling, and soon, elk will be also!

Camp is done for 2005.....and what a smoking year. We tagged out on mule deer, and were very close to doing the same on elk. A fantastic group of guys made for a great camp, with many memories to hold onto for when we can't go any more.
