How Big Is This Bear???

I posted a bunch of bear pics on the bowhunting forum awhile back, and I still have plenty more. I know little about bear sizebut from the best I can tell this is one of the biggest that I have gotten pictures of. It is also one that I have the most pics of. Can you guys tell how big it really is?? A good shooter?? I hope to tag a good one if everything goes well and they stick around.

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

Judging by the surrounding vegetation and the size of the ears compared to the body, I would bet this guy wouldn't go much above 150 lbs or so. Sure does not look like a really big bear. Deciding if he was a shooter or not would have to be a decision you would make, though.

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

Well I've never hunted bears before, but have seen tons of them. I weigh 165lbs and that bears got me by a good 100lbs. I put him closer to the 275-300lb range.
Just a guess!!!---------ElkNut1

Thanks Guys. Here are a few morebears from the same area to help compare. Since I have never taken a bear I wouldnt be too picky with my bow. Here the legal weight is 100 pounds. I just dont want to mess up and take something I'm not supposed to by using bad judgement.

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

This is certainly not a mature bear. The ears are too large and he has the body shape of a young bear.

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

Yep, I would say around that 150# mark, at most.

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

You could go to the site and tie trail tape 36" off the ground , or 45 or 60 . I f its under the 36 its small , just under the 45'' its big, just under the 60''..... run away its going to eat you HA HA. seriously though The bear I shot last spring ,its back was almost at the top of a 45 gal drum( Saskatchewan, we can bait) about 44 '' and he was about 380lbs. I'm sure weight can vary lots but at least you will have a visual reference to go by. have fun

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

i'm going to guess around 150 max. lean frame and big ears. a mature bear weighting around 200 will have smaller looking ears

from what i've learned about judging bears... i would have to agree that it's probably 200 #s at the most.

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

Thanks for all the replies. I have a picture of me standing in the exact same spot. I am 5'10" and go about 285lbs. If I line the pictures up perfectly square the height of the bears head seems to be just above my belly button. If all these smaller bears are around then wouldnt it be likely they have a ma and pa running around the same general area??

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

oh yes u are perfectly right ,mama and papa bear are very big ,and they are not far away ....they are very big ...because they hide all day , and hunt all night !!!!!!!

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

I have to agree. The bear in the first pic would go around 200 pounds while the bear in the second would go more towards 125. As far as ma and pa being around you won't have to worry about that with these bears. Even the one in the last pic is last years cub and wouldn't be with the mother anymore. We had three bear in our camp 2 nights ago and this years cubthat came in wentaround 30 pounds right now. We also had one in that would be pushing 400 pounds but I'll have to show you his pic after I get him this bear season.:D

I would guess the first one to be high 100s (180ish) the and the second to be very low 100s.

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

I will tell you first hand that its tough to judge them in the woods. You really have to get good at it before you take any shots. I know that we had some come into camp this year that were close to 100 pounds, and some that were over 300. The only thing you will know for sure is when you see a HUGE bear. There is nothing like that in the world.

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

One thing I have learned about bears is that when you look at them and they dont have a belly draging on the ground and a head so big the ears look like they arnt there you will give a few extra pounds.the second onelooks like a 90-110 pound bear by the size of the ears, head, broadness os shoulders(well lack there of) and distance between the belly and ground.

With a 100 pound minnium I would be a little lerry about shooting it.

Your bear is too skinny it doesn't load up ? He he he lol.

In all seriouness the bear in the original post is a young bear maybe 125 to 150 But if it doesn't weigh a 100 lbs , tehn open the belly and stick a 50 lbs cement block in it and saw it back up, ask your taxidermist how to do that <lol

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

wow, that last pic is of a real bruiser. Ears look small for its head and there is very little transition from head to body, the old no-neck. The first pics I agree are small bears, lots of daylight between gut and ground and also the ears on the one look like satelite dishes, but he'll get bigger next year! At least you have some coming around. In my experience, when there are ton of bears hitting a bait, then there (generally) isn't a monster in the area. I have hunted a couple different areas and if there is a bunch of bears hitting the bait, then all of a sudden the activity dies off but the bait is still gone, that is often a sign that a real brute has moved into the area as they are very territorial of their chow. Good luck at getting one!

Gotta agree with most of the posts. The picture in the beginning is a small bear. 150 lbs is probably generous, 125 more likely at the time of the pic. Second bear would die if he was under my stand. That's a nice bear.

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

I haven't see alot of bears, but I do know that they look bigger than what they really are. I would say that the first is not much over 110lbs and the second is about 90lbs tops.

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

After guiding bear hunters and having thousands of pics of bears I can tell you that neither of these bears is over 120 lbs soaking wet.

Edited to add: After reading my post it sounded bad. I meant to add that any bear being your first is a good bear, no matter the size. Good Luck!!

I would have initially guess somewhere in the 300 pound range though the more I think about it the more it does look a bit smaller. 200 pound maybe?

RE: How Big Is This Bear???

if you think those first bear go 200 then the one i posted on the third page must weigh 900 lbs:D
