Best round for elk? (assuming I am comfortable using it on elk)

IMO, you be better off with more ponies than that for elk.

Everyone here knows I am all for using cartridges that others would never consider using on elk like the .270 and 7mm-08 but the 30-30 isn't an elk round IMHO.

If you are going to use it regardless then definetly get the Federal 170 grain partitions and keep shots to less than 150 yards. This is where the energy levels will drop below 1200 foot pounds. Also keep your shots limited to broadside or slight to a medium quartering away shot.
