3 More Days Until The Moose Hunt

We leave Wed Oct 2nd. Two friends, my two sons and I will embark on our annual moose hunt. It's a fly-in to a remote lake in northern Ontario. Although remote, the cabin is well equipped. The rifle season doesn't open until the 6th. so we'll have a few days to get comfortable, scout around a bit and do some (excellent) walleye fishing. Preparation is complete; the rifle is sighted, everything's packed and except for the last minute food items we're ready to go. Last year's moose meat is almost gone so it's time to replenish the freezer. Of course the 'moose hunt' is only one of the reasons for this trip or maybe it's the excuse for the trip. Ten days goes by far too fast. Once a moose is taken (and one is enough) then there are bear, ducks, ruffled grouse and as I mentioned earlier, walleye fishing to occupy our too short days. I feel very fortunate to be able to make this annual trip with family and friends and I'm just counting the days.

I'm sure there are many of you also preparing for your hunt and I for one would be interested in hearing your story or feelings on it. I guess one the reasons for this post is my concern for all the rhetoric and political pressure from the anti-hunting groups and I wonder how much longer we'll be able to enjoy our sport or if our grandchildren will be able to. gg.

<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> God luck on the hunt!! I'm preppin' for a New Mexico Elk hunt in Oct. and I've got it so bad it hurts. Nothing more njoyable than some days in the wild. I'm considering applying for an elk hunt in Alberta next year with a buddy that live in Calgary. Any recommendations? How big are the Canadian Moose? Do thet compare to the Yukon moose in Alaska & NWT?

Hey Goodguy,

Our annual moose hunt in N.W. Ontario is with family every year and as much as it can get aggravating at times, I look forward to it every year.

Your right about the future of hunting, If we don't get younger people involved before the anti's twist their minds eventually there will be nothing left. The concept of living in a concrete jungle for the rest of my life just doesn't cut it. There's something to say about seeing a sun rise on a cold morning and about 10 hours later seeing it go back down. A city park is not the same and someone walking a dog isn't wildlife.

Good luck on your trip, we leave on the 12th. Can't wait to hear the symphony of Kabooooooooooooms in the fall air.

DreaminBoutElk, Our moose around as large as the Yukon in Ontario. I believe our Bulls top out at about 1800 lbs. The biggest rack I've ever seen was in the 60 to 65 inch range.

Cheers,

Good luck guys!

I leave for a week archery moose hunt on Sunday. I've got three more hours to go at work and then I'm off. Shopping for food tonight, pack the truck tommorow and heading out early Sunday morning.
We'll arrive with enough time to set up camp and do some scouting.
Man, it's been a long week. I can't concentrate on anything.

Last time we were there we say some really nice bulls. One rewal bruiser. I can't wait. I love moose hunting.
