.270 winchester

Would a .270 winchester be a capeable gun to take down an elk and if so what ammunition should i use?

Oh lord! Here we go again. This will spiral out of control in 5,4,3,2,1...blast off

Yes, a 270 will kill an elk. There are rifles better suited for the job in my opinion but the 270 will most difinately kill an elk.

If I where to use a 270 for elk I would load it with at least 150 grain bullets.

I don't have a 270 and I've never killed an elk.
These are my qualifications.
I just could'nt let another one of these threads go
without posting.Withthis completevoid of
experience I will probably effect as much as the
hundreds of poststo follow. Have fun everybody!

Oh yeah, "if you make a good shot with a good
bullet the dead elk won't know the difference".

But "why use a minimal tool when there are more
appropriate ones available?"
See, I told you I would be ofno help.

Well if'n I was a booger man I would'nt be
afraid of no horse pistol!
just sand-baggin'

i suggest you do a search - 270 elk - you'll find more opinions than you're gonna want to read.

RE: .270 winchester

I have shot Elk with .270, but have to limit myself to broadside shots.

Many hunters and guides consider the .270 too light to be used as an Elk caliber. Maybe, maybe not, but the crudentials of the .270 in the field cannot be denied. The .270 with it's oversized case holds enough powder to push a 150-grain bullet in the 3,000 fps range, and the retained energy at 400 yards is nearly 1,200 ft/lbs, which will certainly ruin any Elks day with a well placed shot.
But because the heaviest bullet offered is the 150-grain, many hunters prefer a caliber that offers a heavier bullet and more retained energy.
You will have to consider the type of terrain you will be hunting in also and the U.S. Forest Service would be a good place to start for this infomation, or the Game and Fish department for the state you will be hunting in.
Consider the fact that in certain situations the Elk will not always be standing broadside, and the bullet will have to go through a great deal of mass and bone to hit the vitals. But there is no doubt about it , the .270 has proved itself to be an adequite caliber for Elk hunting.

I have to laugh every time I see the 270/elk threads. You are new here, so hopefully the seasoned posters will be nice to you. I have shot two elk with my 270. While that doesn't make me an expert, I can tell you a 270 will kill an elk. I shot one with a 140 grain Partition and the other with a 140 grain Accubond. Both one shot kills at a standing still, broadside animal and at a reasonable range. But!!!!!! I am wanting a larger caliber rifle. What if next time my only shot is not a perfectly positioned elk? I would like to have a little margin for error. I bought my 270 because I knew I could handle the recoil and I was afraid of the magnums. I have since learned the recoil from 300's and even 338's can be managed. Please read my "survived the recoil"post in theGun Forum.Go to the range and pratice often with whatever you choose. Good Luck, Jim

Seems like it is always, always, alwaysthe 270's that have to ask....

Smaller and they know the answer, no.
Larger and they know the answer, yes.

IMHO, 270's are marginal for a hunter who wants to be in command of his options.

There are aton ofthings your gonna hear about this subject; here are the three that are the most true 1)a 270 will kill elk 2)it is NOT the idealcaliber 3)this 270/elk subject is probably THE most controversial subject on these boards. #3 should tell you something. My advice is if you can afford a 7mag or 30-06 or BIGGER use it. If recoil is a problem the 7mm-08 or similar short action is probably a better choice because the 270 will kick you nearly as bad as the 06 will and not deliever the extra umphto the elk.
