New Rifle Recomendations
hey everyone i know this question is asked often but ... i am seriously considering purchasing a new rifle in the next 7-10 months and iam just wondering what caliber i should get... I hunt moose and other big critters so iam thinking of something over .300 win mag(because i alrady have one) like maybe the .325 wsm or maybe a .338 mag. I would prefer a winchester or remington... What do you people think??

RE: New Rifle Recomendations
I would say sell the 300 winnie and buy a 300 Ultra.
If you wanna keep the 300 winnie I would opt for a .338 Ultra mag or a .375 H&H,thats the only real step above the 300 Win Mag IMO. BBJ |
RE: New Rifle Recomendations
I don't think you need to step up in powder capasity to step up in big game performance. I also don't think the 338 Win mag will offer you much over what the 300 does as far as on game performance goes. What one can do with a 338 so can another with a 300.
Personally, I'd probably look at a big bore lever action like a .444, 45-70, or 450 Marlin. If you want a bolt action I might look at a 35 Whelen or 350 Rem mag. |
RE: New Rifle Recomendations
Hi Moose:
I was in the same pickle as you and the advice BBJ and Bulls gave you is awfully close to what I ended up with. I had a shot at a NIB SAKO 75 300 RUM for cheap, and it got away from me. I ended up with the .300 I had, .45-70 marlin and a SAKO .416. As a matter of fact, I have been trying to decide fortwo months whichwill accompany me on the pack-in elk hunt this year. FWIW, I love the .416 and if big game is on the menu, the only round that might be more versatile is the .416 Rigby. If you already have the .300, don't waste your time considering a .338. Good luck, CE |

RE: New Rifle Recomendations
I have a .300 Weatherby but the balistics on the .325 WSM look great...;)

RE: New Rifle Recomendations
I hate to disagree (no I don't) but the 338win is a significant improvement over the 300 win in terms of kinetic energy. Its true that much of the same game that can be killed with a 338 can be killed with a 300.The same can be said about a 25-06 and 300 win. You aren't going to stand here and tell me that the 25-06 is equivalent to a 300 win mag are you? If I was looking for a new/larger rifle and I already owned a 300 win I would probably seriously consider the 375 H&H though.

RE: New Rifle Recomendations
Everyday the .375 H&H is looking better and better for my next rifle choice.
Thanks everone for the input. |
RE: New Rifle Recomendations
How about a 350 remington magnum. I have a remington 700 classic in this cartridge and love it. I shoot the either the hornady 200 gr round nose or nosler 225 gr partition depending on what I am hunting.Remington chambers the 673 for the 350 magnum and ruger is offering there alweather in 350 rem magnum also.

RE: New Rifle Recomendations
HiShato:
Since the wife doesn't appear to be cooking this evening, I have time to disagree... I took a look through the Speer #13 and found: With a 200gr bullet, the .338 burns a few more grains of powder to get about 100fps additional velocity. I know there are differences such as BC, SD etc, but I can't see how they are significant. For example, a .300 Winnie will push a 200 gr Speerspitzer at 2,843 fps with 69gr of IMR 4350. The .338 will make 2,959 fps with 73.5 gr. If you already have a rifle that you like, the differences don't seem worth the cost for a new complete rig. If you can't live with those differences, you could go to Midway and get the Federal High Energy 200 gr partition loads, which list at 2,930 fps. Either one is a great caliber, but they are too close in capability for a two gun rack. Good luck, CE |
RE: New Rifle Recomendations
This is becoming my standard response, but I think I have all the rifle I'd want to meet your needs in my Remington 7600 in .35 Whelen.

RE: New Rifle Recomendations
how about the 338RUM? 8mm REM. MAG?
|
RE: New Rifle Recomendations
If you need more power than the 300 Win Mag, just get a 375 H&H and be ready for anything.

RE: New Rifle Recomendations
I don't have a recommendation on caliber. Performance on paper tends to far exceed most of our own performances. Have you shot some of the calibers listed? How were they? Kick okay? Particularmodels feel more comfortable to you? What are the reports from shooters re: accuracy per calibers and per brands/models of firearms (based on thier shooting, not theory)? Let us know what you decide on.
