Scope for Caribou Hunting...
Hi,
I'm heading up to northern Quebec this september for a Caribou Hunt. The terrain is pretty open and, from what I've been told, 200-300 yard shots are not uncommon. I currently have a 1.75-6x32 VX-III mounted on an 06. Does anybody have experience hunting in this terrain (100-200 miles north of Shefferville)? Do you think this scope is enough or should I look into something a bit more powerful? Thanks for your advice. |
RE: Scope for Caribou Hunting...
If you've been using that scope for a while and can consistantly hit what you aim at at 200 to300 yds then why change, however, if you are unable to get a good group at that distance then probably a new scope won't be much better.not everyone can shoot effectively at that distance, and then you mix in wind/rain/snow/cold and it really gets interesting. the good news is that you will probably see so many caribou that you will be successful. I hunted way south of shefferville and actually had to take a step back if i wanted to shoot because there were so many caribou so close, good hunting

RE: Scope for Caribou Hunting...
That scope should work out fine, you have enough magnification to shoot long and short.
If you wanna get a new scope, any standared 3-9 varidble should work.I have 3-9's on almost all my guns and many never leave 4x or 6x.I have shot deer and antelope out to 400+ yds with just 4x,so you should be safe.My 30-06 carries a straight 4x and I have never had a problem. BBJ |

Your scope magnification will work for those distances if you have practised a lot with it, but if you are thinking about a new scope, I would stick with the VX-III and get it in 3.5-10X40.

RE: Scope for Caribou Hunting...
I have hunted caribou 3 times in Quebec and found shots are usually under 200 yds. I would not mess with my setup if I was you, your good to go !

I agree, if you can't hit them with what you have, then buy ammo instead and PRACTISE!!!!
