Any cartridge that is suitable for northern whitetails is suitable for hunting black bears.The average black bear weighs 200 to 250lbs which is no bigger than a mature buck.The 270 with a premium bullet will work fine as will any caliber from .257" on up.

Yes, the 270 is more than up to the task. Several friends used their 270 for black bears here in Colorado over bait when it was legal to use bait. They used a 150 grain bullet.

270 works fine I was video tapeing a buddy useing a 270 and and the bear dropped about 25 yards away.
