First time black bear hunter (advise?)
This august fall bear season opens in Oregon. I talked to the fish and game biologist and he told wear to go. We cant bait in oregon but you cant put any scent on your body. There will be mosqitos about (mid summer!). Should I use bug spray? What scents should I use. I talked to one guy that says he rubs bacon greese all over him. Damn, you get dirty enough hunting for a week. Bacon greese??

If you can't bait then get in touch with a trapper and try some of the lure scents they use. Some are very effective, you couldn't pay me to walk around wearing bacon grease

Try not to use bug spray. Bears have a very keen sense of smell. When we hunt bears in Minn, we also have alot of mosquitos. We use clothes that are thicker so they cannot bite through and as a last resort you can get non scented bug spray. A person can also learn to tolerate some mosquitos for the chance at a bear. Good Luck www.huntersdengunshop.com

One very bad drawback from bug spray is that it will get on the meat when you butcher it. Try treated clothes or lots of vitamin B12. Just in case the bear thinks you are food try to avoid smelling like food. Skunk sent is another idea that will eliminate human oder, for the serious hunter. Sent your clothes and keep them in a sealed container until you are ready to hunt. No sence in stink'n up the truck, Or make sent rags to hang close to your blind. Try a preditor call on tape if you can, that black bear cub bawl is one I'd suggest. You can also use a rabbit call by mouth. They can come in a bit agressive so have a partner watch your back.

If the mosquitos are that bad buy a thermacell. They're around 30 bucks and do an outstanding job. As far as hunting the bears try and find natural food plots that they hit and set up there. Basically let nature do the baiting for ya.

I talked to one guy that says he rubs bacon greese all over him. LMAO!!!!!!! Dude, you just made my day!!! If you are looking for a good scent to try, I suggest anisette. A little goes a long way, and bears seem to come in to check out that licorice smell. I think your best bet is to scout berry bushes and natural feed areas you can glass from a distance that are well off the beaten path. |
RE: First time black bear hunter (advise?)
Bacon grease will attract more bugs than you will want to deal with.
We can't bait in Washington either but you can call them in. Here is how I do it. Douse yourself with cow elk scent and call the bears with a cow/calf call. Trust me it works! |
RE: First time black bear hunter (advise?)
I have an electric call w/fawn distress. I just ordered a fawn decoy. Should I use Doe in heet scent? Thats about all I can find.
