.270 WSM for Elk
Was wondering if anyone has used this cal. on Elk? If so what did you think? I was considering one for Kentucky whitetail and Idaho Elk.

RE: .270 WSM for Elk
The old 270 Winchester has killed train loads of elk so the 270 WSM will certainly do the same. Go with a good 150 grain or heavier bullet and make room in the freezer. Some here are of the opinion that the 270 is a marginal elk cartridge but many years of doing the job well is plenty of proof that that opinion just don't hold water.

RE: .270 WSM for Elk
Sorry James, I gotta rebutt this one.:D the 270 has taken lots of elk, but it has also wounded more elk than any other caliber, its enough gun, but it will limit your shots. I would rather have my abilities limit my shots, not my gear. try an 30-06 or bigger. IF you simply cant handle the recoil of that class of rifle (30-06 and up) is the only reason I can see for useing that caliber for elk.

I'll just say this......................
If you can't kill an elk with a 270WSM then you have no business out there hunting them in the first place. |
RE: .270 WSM for Elk
That dang rifle must at least shoot a 1,000 yrds when you come out elk hunting the first time. You recond? Bobby

RE: .270 WSM for Elk
The 270wsm will certainly kill elk as will cartridges such as the 25-06 and 260rem,but I personally prefer larger calibers.

RE: .270 WSM for Elk
Although I have bigger guns, and can shoot them proficiently, I prefer the .270 for elk. My .270 Ackley Improved is propelling bullets at the same speed as the WSM, and is working splendidly - particularly with these new bonded bullets. The 130 Swift Sciroco at 3425 fps is very effective on elk, and the 140 Accubond is no slouch either. I used to lean toward the 150 grain bullets, like the Sierra SBT and the Speer Grand Slam, but these new bonded bullets in a lighter weight work at least as good - and shoot flatter.

OMG, HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
i guess the elk rifle argument will never end. god help us all if elkampmaster or manboy get ahold of this thread:) |
RE: .270 WSM for Elk
There is not one speck of evidence that the 270 has wounded any more elk than any other cartridge out there. Also 90 % of wounded game is not the caliber but the shooter unless you are trying to hunt elk with a 22 rimfire. I personally have ued the 270 and know many other hunter that also do. Wounding animals has not been our expierence at all. But notice that I said hunters as opposed to just shooters. If you use a 270 and if you do your part then you will have no problems.
Big Bulls. You could not be more correct. |

ORIGINAL: bigbulls If you can't kill an elk with a 270WSM then you have no business out there hunting them in the first place. Personally, I'm looking very hard at getting my son a .270 WSM for his first elk hunt this year (he's 12). My sister shoots a WSM and loves it. I'm a ballistic and hand loading junkie and I've been very impressed with the majority of the WSM line. Anyway, bigbulls has it right above. Just wanted to through in my 2 cents on the WSM. |
