Is there a pickup that gets 25-30 mpg?

Gonna be in the market for a new ride come income tax refund time. gonna be looking for something i can use as a daily driver to work and back and to run the backroads, looking for anything fun outdoors. Does anyone know of any pickups new or old, 2wd or 4wd, 4cyl or 6 cyl that can get me 25-30 mpg. I'm probably looking to spend $12500 or less. Thanks for ANY info. Shaner

Help keep the economy going and buy a Ford with Eco Boost!!
Or buy a older import and support right to work

30mpg will be a stretch for any pickup. Maybe hit 30 in a Ranger 5spd, in a straight line on highway at 50mph

Escape will get close, but it's not a pickup. It'll be good for high-20s maybe just touch 30 if you're careful. The Hybrid version will do it, but it's not a pickup

Hard to get anywhere near 25mpg with a PU even a small one. I have a 2010 F150 with a 5.4V8 and I get around 20 on a trip and 18 around town. Not sure about that ecco boost. I think the dif in price would pay for a lot of gas. I plan to trade in a year or so and will look at Ford again. Much better ride and performance than all my previous Silverados.

Answer is really no. Four popper rangers would be best IMO.

Full size? The new dodge v-6 gets good mileage.

deerdust 08-01-2013 10:23 PM

The best I ever got out of any of my trucks was in a 91 S-10 v6 2.8 4spd that got me about 19 to 23 city/hwy

huntingkidPA 08-06-2013 10:24 AM

my 97 2.3L ranger gets about 18-20 city. its an automatic which limits how good it can be on gas. gonna change the plugs soon, run some seafoam and motor honey through it see if it ups it at all. If your serious about getting good mpg get a bullydog tuner. it hooks up to your computer system and there are 3 tunes for it, power, economy, and both. It says it will boost your hp by 15-20 and it can give you up to 5 more mpg. they are about 300 bucks.

Every Ford F350 I have owned or dealt with 7.3 diesel (7of them over the years) got 24 empty/16 with a 28' gooseneck hauling farm related loads around the state of Fla. As soon as they hit 100k they lost 25% and went to 16/10 or so. BUT you have this mileage thing all wrong! You have to think about this a little bit but,,,,, most of the problems in this world, think along terrorism and related topics, like Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran etc. are funded by Petrol dollars. My take is the sooner the oil runs out the sooner the trouble makers wont have access to unlimited funds and excessive time on their hands to think about what to do next. They will have to start rethinking about basic stuff like eating sooner or later. When they get to that point,,, WORLD PEACE! That's one reason I drive a 1962 Jeep utility wagon,9mpg,10 if I can get to the top of the hill and coast down. OH the things we do for mankind! (I hope that wasn't too political for the thread). I've "heard" that the Dodge diesels with a tuner can get somewhere in the mid 20's and my buddy's Ford 350 with a diesel and tuner gets low 20's. I can tell you that a GMC 3/4 tons with diesel gets 13-15.

Ridge Runner 11-26-2013 05:44 PM

my 3500 gets 16city/19 interstate, no tuner with 6 speed manual, that's running 55-60couple mph, run it 70-75 and it drops to 14

That seems to be a nice truck.

the 2014 ram 1500 3.0l v6 eco-diesel is supposedly rated at 18city/25 highway. not sure if that's a 4x4 or 2wd.

2014 ford f150 3.7 v6 2wd gets est 17/32.

The ford 4x4 5.0 gets 14/19

You will have to go with a smaller engine, smaller truck. And then you are driving a narrower high vehicle more prone to rolling than a full-size. Personally I like a hatchback type 4-banger car for work and a big 4x4 for the heavier duty. And I have taken the hatchback fishing and hunting too plenty of times as well as hauled 8ft 2x4's home in it. My 4x4 is a suburban - discussing its gas mileage makes me a little sad, although on a trip it can squeeze out 17MPG or even 18 on a good day - but it sure doubles well as a family "van" and wood/drywall/lumber hauler.

Our field engineers just upgraded from 2011 and 2012 F-150's to 2013 and 2014's this year, about half of the guys got Eco-Boosts (course of 27 guys, so around a dozen eco-boosts), EVERY ONE OF THEM has said they aren't getting any better mileage than their old trucks were. They're hitting 16-19mpg on highway (all we drive is highway, and we all keep track for reporting purposes). Supposedly, according to the dealerships, the Eco-boost doesn't start working for the first 20k miles (one dealership said 100k!!!! facepalm), so our guys tried to be patient with the trucks. After 50kmiles on a few of them with no improvement, we had 3 guys do warranty returns on their trucks because they thought something was wrong. 3 new Eco-boosts, same story, crappy mileage. This fleet is almost pure highway driving, most guys putting on 3000-5000 miles per month.

On the other hand, I had a 2010 Dodge Ram 4.7L that I got an honest AVERAGE 25mpg over 8mos. When I compared engine hours to miles driven during the lease, I averaged 72mph. Some tanks came out just over 28mpg. I'm the type that drives 7mph over the limit, so my interstate speeds were 77 or 82mph. Truck had ~20k on it when I picked it up, I turned in the lease at ~112k after 8months.

Mine doesn't. I only have 20k miles on it, but I'm getting 16-17mpg highway. My 2010 and my 2012 got the same, over 200k and 180k lifespans for each respectively (both started tailing off a bit after ~165k, dropped down to around 14-15mpg by the time I upgraded). Commuted around Chicago for a few weeks this winter, been getting about 8mpg in town.

Sadly, my 1991 F-150 5.0L used to get 18mpg highway over a 480k mile life, and the 4x4 was WAY better than the new ones. Although she did start drinking about a quart of oil per tank by the end. My 1993 F-150 5.0 4x4 got 16-18mpg, but she threw a rod at ~230k miles, so that was the end of her. My 1997 5.0 F-150 had a lower geared rear end and 'ton and a half' suspension under the rear end, she didn't get as good, ~12-14mpg empty highway, but I rarely didn't have a trailer on it.

1992 Chevy S-10 Ext. Cab; 4x4; 4.3 Ltr. V-6 Standard 4-speed; 27 mpg. highway

1996 F-250 Ford 4x4; 7.5 ltr. auto trans. (you don't want to know mpg)

Shaner did you ever find a truck? The only trucks I ever knew of that reliably got 25-30+ mpg were the old 80s (maybe they built into the 90s? I don't remember) Isuzu PUP p/u's with Isuzu's turbo diesel 4cyl. They were ugly and rode like crap but they were tough as nails (well the powertrain was, being a typical import the bodies would start to rust on a quiet, foggy night) and they were VERY efficient!

stapher1 01-15-2014 01:27 PM

If you get your wallet out you can buy a New Dodge Ram 1500 Ecodiesel it's suppose to get over 20mpg. Or Wait for the Nissan Titan with a Cummins

Parrot Head 01-16-2014 04:05 AM

I have a 97 s-10 that get 27 mpg highway. They are saying the new Fords will get 30 mpg.

Camo Mike 03-31-2014 05:21 PM

Old. However, I just bought a 1999 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT xcab 4x2 w/ the 4.8L and 3.42 rear end. I got 24.4 highway. I'll take that any day of the week w/ a full size truck.

redgreen 04-02-2014 11:23 AM

My 2011 F150 Super Crew 4x4 gets 18 or 19 on the highway. That is at 55 to 60 mph. Push it a little harder and its 15. Only way you are going to get 30 is downhill in neutral with a good tailwind.

Phil from Maine 04-25-2014 08:19 PM

I have an old S-10 that gets me around 28 miles per gallon that I use mainly for a beater truck to put the miles on when I need them. My old Ford F 350 1 ton gives me almost 12. But it can do a lot of work..

don novicki 05-01-2014 01:41 AM

My old 2001 Silverado got 22-23 on the highway, with cruise on at a constant 70 mph. It was geared 3.13 rear end.My current 2013 Silverado got 17.7 on the highway, with cruise on at a constant 70 mph with the 3.42 rear end ,om my trip to Sask.. I have heard that the Ford Eco-boost doesn't get anywhere near the advertised 23 mpg on the highway and has mileage closer to Fords standard V8. That is exactly why I didn't get a Ford with Eco-boost which is a 3000 dollar option. The truck you seek does not exist......sorry.
