Tuesday morning was a disappointment. I am pretty sure I busted the big Tom I was after off the roost. I also busted another bird as well. I got set up and heard gobbling everywhere for about a half hour or so. Then it got pretty quiet. At 8 o'clock, out of nowhere, I looked to my left and saw 2 Jakes. At first I wasn't going to shoot but then decided since my hunting is going to be limited from here on out so I better take the opportunity. I am still a novice when it comes to turkey hunting so I shot at the Jake about 30 yards away as he was moving away from me at a moderate pace. Feathers flying everywhere as I hit him, he flies up then lands in a treed area about 60 yards away. I figured he was going to die. So, I get up to go get him and I see him walking around. I waited until he got into a clear area and I shot him again. Feathers flying again he runs about 8 steps and stops. I went back to get another shell and went back to about where he was and I saw him sitting there. Just as I was about to pull the gun up and shoot him a third time he flies away about 300 yards across a field and lands in some trees. I made my way over there and never saw him again. I have always heard you can't kill a turkey unless you shoot them in the head. I never believed it. I do now. I won't be able to get back out until next Monday and that will even be iffy. Keep up the good work guys. I may be able to get out more in the second half of the season as you can hunt all day then.

Look on the First page of this thread as I have been trying to keep your NWTF score posted after your name. If I missed a bird let me know.

So no updates
I caught a cold from my grandson and the weather is nasty but am going back out Sunday morning.
I did double on a jake with my nephew Saturday April. 27th. More so to test thst red ring ii put on that gun.
That and it was the last day I could hunt the erd season tag.
Sunday April 28th I picked up my daughter and grandson. We got a slow start on Monday but I did get a jake in that we passed on. Daughter had a grand time as I found many vocal hens and know how to make them mad so they come in! Once by me these new decoys........well the hens just laid down next to them upwards to over 30 minutes.
Then on Tuesday around noon after we moved 3 times I called 5 two yr old toms or better along with 6 or 7 hens and my daughter got to see that gom posse kick the crap out of my jake decoy!!!!!!!
It was awesome. So much so that she shot hers and I blew a hole in the dirt!
Yep flat out missed I rushed as I waited for her 1st,
I know now I should have just waited I would have gotten my shot as I know 1 or 2 or 3 would come back to kick their shopping buddy.
The next day wednesday had my jake decoy violatedyet again but by jakes which ipassed on once again. We could only hunt till noon. I eill go back as I got close to a big guy and now know his fly down spot, I'll be ther way before first light.....then if that do't work I know his late morning strut zone as I found that.......smallclean area in a nasty cedar swamp but is huntable and boy do the hens go thru it!
So igot 4th season to go.....have 3 good prospects....stillhave my michigan tag and 3 or 4 good prospects there. Then 5th will be on us here in WI and ihave 2 killtags for 2 parts of this state and yes a 6th and last season to boot.{
And there stillis kill tags for sale -Ya baby

Here we go as I have a few days rest – will be back out tomorrow night
Fort McCoy April 22 8:21 AM
Limb Hanger (sorry poor pic – cell phone)

12 Ga Shotgun 3 inch Winchester supreme 4s – 21 yards
Eastern
Wt 20 lbs 10 oz
Beard 9”
Right Spur 1 .1875
Left Spur 1.1875
NWTF Score Your score is 20.625 + 11.875 + 11.875 + 18 = 62.375

April 27 Monroe County WI
12 Ga Shotgun with a Red Ring Shotgun scope (New)
31 yards
Eastern
Wt 13 lbs 12 oz
Bd 5 inch
Spurs 0.375 each side
Your score is 13.75 + 3.75 + 3.75 + 10 = 31.25

Even though there was a few days left to hunt I would not be out. So had the chance to use the tag and doubled with my Nephew which was his first!

My Nephew with the Jakes

Then my Michigan hunt with my kid where I blew a hole in the dirt as I had 5 of these guys less than 10 yards and she got hers …..what a bird for her and her second
23 lbs 3 oz
Beard 11
Spurs 1 in each side
Your score is 23.1875 + 10 + 10 + 22 = 65.1875

I had all 5 come in attack my jake and when they came it was like the flying wedge – all 5 in strut and right next to each other and the took turns riding my jake! And I miss!

And that's a Fact ~ Jack!

Heading out Sunday again, think I'm going to carry the shotgun now instead of the bow.
